JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Director – Psychiatric Services serves as the clinical authority for psychiatric and psychotropic medication oversight across Redwood Family Care Network (RFCN). This role does not provide direct evaluation, diagnosis, or prescribing services. Instead, it is responsible for establishing, standardizing, and overseeing psychiatric-related practices across all programs.

This role is grounded in RFCN’s core values—People, Continuous Improvement, Innovation, Integrity, and Empowerment—and ensures that psychiatric and medication practices are person-centered, clinically sound, compliant, and scalable across a multi-state organization.

The Clinical Director supervises the Nurses and partners with Quality Assurance, Behavioral Health, and Operations to strengthen clinical systems, reduce risk, and improve outcomes for the individuals we support.

Key Responsibilities Aligned to Core Values

People – Respect, Dignity & Empathy

  • Promote person-centered, least-restrictive approaches to behavioral and psychiatric care.
  • Ensure psychotropic medications are used appropriately, ethically, and as a last resort.
  • Support teams in understanding behavior through a clinical and human-centered lens—not just symptom management.
  • Partner with the Behavioral Support team to ensure alignment between medication practices and individualized behavior support plans.
  • Reinforce dignity, choice, and individual rights in all clinical guidance and decision-making.

Integrity – Accountability & Compliance

  • Establish and oversee standardized policies and procedures for psychotropic medication management and PRN use.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Provide clear clinical expectations for documentation, monitoring, and follow-up related to psychotropic medications.
  • Partner with QA to identify gaps, ensure transparency, and address compliance risks proactively.
  • Uphold ethical clinical practices and reinforce accountability across all levels of the organization.

Continuous Improvement – Learning & Growth

  • Analyze trends related to:
    • PRN psychotropic utilization
    • Medication errors
    • Behavioral incidents and crisis events
    • Hospitalizations
  • Lead or support root cause analyses and implement system-level improvements.
  • Continuously refine clinical protocols and practices based on data, outcomes, and regulatory feedback.
  • Support development of standardized definitions, workflows, and reporting related to medication oversight.
  • Drive measurable improvements in quality, safety, and consistency across programs.

Innovation – Practical & Purpose-Driven

  • Design and implement scalable systems for psychiatric and medication oversight across multiple states and service lines.
  • Support integration and optimization of systems such as Therap-EMAR to enhance real-time visibility and compliance.
  • Introduce practical tools, dashboards, and processes that improve decision-making and reduce risk.
  • Partner with QA and IT to explore data-driven and technology-enabled solutions for clinical oversight.
  • Advance RFCN’s Medication Management Program (MMP) through structured, sustainable implementation.

Empowerment – Insight That Drives Action

  • Serve as a clinical resource and subject matter expert to nursing, behavioral health, QA, and operations teams.
  • Translate complex clinical concepts into clear, actionable guidance for frontline staff and leadership.
  • Build clinical competency across the organization through training, coaching, and consultation.
  • Support leaders in making informed, confident decisions related to psychiatric and behavioral health needs.
  • Foster a culture where teams feel supported, informed, and accountable in delivering safe care.

Nursing Oversight & Clinical Practice Standardization

  • Supervise Nursing leadership to strengthen medication-related practices across all regions.
  • Establish consistent expectations for:
    • Psychotropic medication monitoring
    • Side effect recognition and escalation
    • PRN administration protocols
  • Support nursing teams in managing complex behavioral health needs.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Collaborate with:
    • Nursing leadership
    • Behavioral Health (BCBAs/ABCs)
    • Quality Assurance and Operations
  • Participate in complex case reviews and provide clinical perspective.
  • Partner with external providers (psychiatrists, pharmacies, primary care) to support continuity of care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current, unrestricted Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) license
  • Minimum 5–7 years of psychiatric experience
  • Experience supporting individuals with IDD and/or complex behavioral needs
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, policy development, or system oversight

Preferred:

  • Experience in multi-state provider organizations
  • Background in quality assurance, regulatory compliance, or clinical governance
  • Familiarity with EHR systems (Therap, EMAR) and audit tools
