What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Controller position at Redmont Talent Partners?
Redmont Talent Partners is partnering with a custom manufacturing client in the East Birmingham, AL area that is looking to add an Assistant Controller to their accounting team as a new position. This is a hands-on role for someone who knows accounting, likes to dig into the details, and can help us keep things organized as the company continues to grow.
This person will work closely with our Chief Accountant and will be involved in the day-to-day accounting as well as helping clean up and improve some areas of the business.
What You'll Be Doing
A big part of this position will be accounts receivable and accounts payable.
You’ll work closely with the person currently handling invoicing to ensure invoices are sent correctly and customer payments are applied to the appropriate invoices.
Some AR cleanup is also needed, including properly applying payments that were posted, as well as reviewing and resolving older and past-due accounts.
This role goes beyond simply running an aging report. We need someone who is comfortable digging into accounts, reviewing invoices and payments, identifying issues, and making the necessary corrections.
You'll also:
- Manage day-to-day AP and pay bills through Bill.com.
- Review and reconcile customer accounts, post payments, and track outstanding balances.
- Work through past-due accounts and help improve the collection process.
- Research and resolve payment and accounting discrepancies.
- Assist with balance sheet reconciliations, monthly close, and financial statement preparation.
- Work with the Chief Accountant on monthly financials and other accounting matters.
- Assist with cash-flow reporting and monthly shareholder distributions.
- Take on additional accounting responsibilities as you become familiar with the business.
- Help improve accounting processes as the company continues to grow.
During the first several months, there will also be a special accounting cleanup project focused on reviewing existing accounts, identifying and correcting issues, and understanding historical activity.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with an accounting degree and manufacturing experience.
You don't have to have been an Assistant Controller before. A strong Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or similar candidate could be a good fit if you have the right experience and like being involved in the details.
You should be comfortable with:
- QuickBooks Online
- Excel
- Word
- Outlook
- Bill.com
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Account reconciliations
- Financial statements
- Month-end close
- Researching accounting discrepancies
Manufacturing experience is important because this person will need to understand how the accounting ties back to jobs, production, invoicing, and the day-to-day operation of the business.
Most importantly, we need someone who is curious and willing to investigate. If a number doesn't make sense, we want you to ask why and figure it out.
Compensation & Benefits
- $90,000–$120,000 base salary, depending on experience
- Bonus program based on company profitability
- Company-paid portion of health insurance with an employee co-pay
- Safe Harbor 401(k): 100% match/contribution on the first 3% and 50% on the next 2%, for a potential 4% company contribution
- Potential opportunity for company stock/equity
- Paid time off and holidays
Why This Position?
This is a new position, so there is room to make it your own.
We're looking for someone who wants to be involved in the business, not someone who only wants to prepare reports and hand them off. You will have the opportunity to work directly with ownership, understand how the business operates, and help improve the accounting function as we continue to grow.
If you're an experienced accountant who enjoys solving problems, finding discrepancies, and making sure the numbers are actually right, we'd like to talk with you.
