JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE OF POSITION
Primary Teacher
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Provides an educational program for pupils in grades 1,2,3, or a combination thereof, and assists in other school programs as assigned.
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:
Building Principal
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaches reading, language arts, social studies (including inter-racial and inter-cultural education), mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, music, and other appropriate activities, utilizing the course of study and implementing the philosophy, goals, objectives and policies adopted by the Board of Education.
2. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study specified in the state law.
3. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
4. Participates in establishing standards for pupils' academic and social growth, utilizes assessment techniques, and maintains appropriate records.
5. Creates an effective environment for learning by providing a functional and attractive classroom setting, and by creating an atmosphere which reflects a positive, accepting and understanding approach favorable to learning and helpful to the maintenance of the pupil's self worth.
6. Plans and provides instruction to meet pupil needs using varied approaches and materials.
7. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
8. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
9. Communicates with parents through a variety of means, reporting pupil progress and interpreting the school program.
10. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with appropriate members of the school community in assessing and helping pupils solve problems.
11. Maintains, develops and supplements instructional programs in music, physical educational and library skills as presented by specialist teachers as time permits.
12. Maintains professional competence through participation in educational activities provided by the District and self-selected professional growth activities.
13. Cooperates by implementing programs for the gifted in accordance with the District Mentally Gifted Minors Program.
14. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
2. Insures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting, and ventilation to the extent possible.
3. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom-activities unless pupils are with other personnel designated to supervise.
4. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with District testing program.
5. Participates in curriculum development programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.
6. Participates in district and faculty committees and shares in the sponsorship of student activities.
7. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and parent group meetings.
8. Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants and other para-professionals, where applicable.
9. May contribute to professional training of future teachers.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
