Part-Time Substance Use and Problem Gambling Counselor/Group Facilitator

Long Island Treatment Center is seeking a compassionate, engaging, and dependable Part-Time Counselor/Group Facilitator to join our growing outpatient team. This position combines group facilitation with individual counseling for adults receiving treatment for substance use disorders and problem gambling.

The ideal candidate is skilled at creating interactive and clinically meaningful group experiences, building strong therapeutic relationships, and providing person-centered, recovery-oriented care. This is a consistent 15-hour-per-week position consisting of in-person group facilitation, remote individual counseling, and documentation time.

Schedule

Required In-Person Hours

• Tuesday: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

• Friday: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

Remote Individual Counseling Hours

• Approximately 6-8 hours per week

• Individual sessions may be scheduled flexibly based on both client and clinician availability, with evening availability preferred. Monday-Wednesday evenings preferred.

Candidates should be available to work approximately 15 hours per week.

Primary Responsibilities

• Facilitate three recurring therapy groups each week, including one problem gambling-focused group and two substance use disorder-focused groups.

• Facilitate engaging psychoeducational, process-oriented, relapse prevention, and skills-based group sessions.

• Maintain an individual caseload of approximately 8–10 clients.

• Provide remote individual counseling that supports each client’s identified treatment and recovery goals.

• Complete individual assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge planning, and other required clinical documentation.

• Create a welcoming, respectful, and clinically appropriate therapeutic environment.

• Use evidence-based interventions while adapting services to meet clients’ individual needs, readiness for change, and stages of recovery.

• Monitor client participation, progress, risk factors, and barriers to treatment.

• Collaborate with the Clinical Director and multidisciplinary treatment team to coordinate care and support positive treatment outcomes.

• Complete group and individual documentation accurately and within required timeframes in the electronic medical record.

• Maintain compliance with OASAS, Joint Commission, ethical, and agency documentation standards.

• Participate in supervision, staff meetings, case conferences, and ongoing professional development as required.

Required Qualifications

• Current New York State CASAC-G credential; or

• Current New York State CASAC credential with a willingness to complete the required problem gambling coursework toward the CASAC-G designation. Qualifying training is available online at no cost.

• Minimum of two years of experience working in substance use disorder, problem gambling, behavioral health, or a related treatment setting.

• Experience facilitating psychoeducational and process-oriented therapy groups.

• Strong clinical, interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.

• Ability to manage an individual caseload and complete documentation within required timeframes.

• Familiarity with 12-Step and other recovery support approaches.

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.

• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and comply with all applicable ethical and confidentiality requirements.

• All credentials and certifications must remain active and in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications

• CASAC-G credential or previous experience providing problem gambling treatment.

• Experience working in an OASAS-licensed outpatient treatment program.

• Experience providing both individual and group counseling.

• Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, relapse prevention, harm reduction, and other evidence-based practices.

• Experience working with clients who have co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns.

• Familiarity with electronic medical records and insurance-compliant clinical documentation.
