Board members of Recovery Café San Jose are vital to the success of the organization. The impact of an effective RCSJ board member is expressed by the equation: I = EC 4W Impact (I) comes from being Emotionally Committed (EC) to the mission and success of RCSJ. That Emotional Commitment is reflected in the 4 Ws:
- Work: The RCSJ Board is one of its members’ three top community activities and they devote time to work to help RCSJ succeed.
- Wisdom: Board Members use their experience, skills, talents and wisdom to support, advise, guide and, when necessary, constructively challenge the RCSJ Executive Director to ensure the organization’s success. Board Members are committed to remain aware that they hold in trust the stewardship of the mission and vision of the organization in their governing.
- Wealth: In collaboration with the Executive Director, board members take responsibility for fundraising and the overall financial health of RCSJ. Every Board member will make a personally significant contribution to RCSJ, relative to their ability.
- Witness: Board Members share their passion for RCSJ with people in their networks and help connect RCSJ to a wide network of individuals, organizations and resources that can help achieve its mission.
Board Meeting Attendance
The RCSJ Board will meet about 10 times a year at meetings that are scheduled on a monthly basis. Board members should make every effort to attend each board meeting.
Specific Responsibilities
- Attend Board and committee meetings and functions, such as special RCSJ events in person more than 60% of the time.
- Be informed about RCSJ’s mission, services, policies, and programs
- Review agenda and supporting materials prior to Board and committee meetings
- Serve on at least one committee or ad hoc task force annually
- Be willing to take on special assignments as requested
- Make a "significant" financial contribution annually in accordance with the member's financial capability
- Help achieve a balanced annual budget by raising funds and recruiting new donors
- Be committed to use personal and network resources to support and strengthen RCSJ
- as an advocate for RCSJ to others who can help RCSJ accomplish its mission
- Suggest potential nominees to the RCSJ Board who can make significant contributions to the
- work of the organization
- Follow all Board policies, including conflict of interest and confidentiality policies
- Volunteer in the cafe once a month to understand the needs of our community.
- Live in the geographical area of RCSJ and be able to attend in-person and hybrid meetings and gatherings
- Leverage your connections in the San Jose business community, San Jose City Hall and Santa Clara County Offices to help further the cafe's mission.
Experience Needed
- Previous experience working with non-profits.
- Financial Management and understanding P&Ls, Cash Flow and Balance Sheets
