What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Field Technician position at Rebnord Technologies?
IT Field Technician — Immediate Opening
Rebnord Technologies has an immediate opening for a dependable, hands-on IT Field Technician. This is a full-time, hourly position based at our office in Storm Lake, Iowa.
The technician will serve as a primary on-site resource for customer service calls, equipment installations, troubleshooting, and technology projects. This is a field-based position—not a primarily remote, work-from-home, programming, or desk-only help-desk role.
The successful candidate must be comfortable traveling to customer locations, performing physical installation work, solving problems independently, and taking responsibility for completing assigned work from initial planning through final documentation and customer communication.
Work Schedule and On-Call Rotation
Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
All IT technicians participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule:
- One week as the primary on-call technician
- One week as the secondary on-call technician
- One week out of the on-call rotation
After-hours calls are generally limited but may occasionally require an on-site visit. Technicians must be able and willing to respond when assigned to the on-call rotation.
Primary Responsibilities
- Travel to customer locations and serve as a primary on-site technician.
- Troubleshoot computer hardware, software, peripherals, network connectivity, and related technology issues.
- Install, configure, replace, relocate, and decommission desktops, laptops, workstations, monitors, printers, and related equipment.
- Perform workstation deployments and assist with customer technology projects.
- Install and service network, low-voltage, security, and communications equipment when assigned.
- Follow assigned work orders, project instructions, technical standards, and safety procedures.
- Keep service tickets and work orders updated with clear, complete, and accurate notes.
- Accurately track labor time, equipment, parts, and materials used on each assignment.
- Communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, supervisors, and project managers.
- Identify additional work or conditions outside the assigned scope and obtain appropriate direction or authorization before proceeding.
- Maintain an organized work area and properly care for company and customer equipment.
- Follow all customer-site access, confidentiality, physical-security, and information-security requirements.
- Participate in the rotating primary and secondary on-call schedule.
Independent Work and Project Ownership
Technicians must be able to take ownership of assigned service calls and projects with limited supervision. Before leaving for a job site, the technician is expected to review the assignment, envision the completed project, anticipate likely obstacles, and identify the tools, equipment, parts, materials, access requirements, and information reasonably needed to complete the work.
While on site, the technician must be resourceful and solution oriented. When unexpected conditions arise, the technician is expected to investigate the problem, evaluate available options, adapt the approach, and make reasonable efforts to complete the assignment without requiring continuous direction from a supervisor.
Encountering an obstacle is not, by itself, a reason to abandon the work or leave the job site. If the original approach cannot be completed, the technician should look for a practical alternative, gather additional information, and communicate with the appropriate customer contact and/or supervisor when authorization, additional resources, or escalation is genuinely required.
Technicians must exercise sound judgment and must not bypass safety procedures, security requirements, customer authorization, manufacturer requirements, or the approved scope of work merely to complete an assignment.
Completing the Job
Before considering an assignment complete, the technician is responsible for:
- Testing the completed work and verifying that it operates as intended.
- Confirming that all assigned project goals and work-order requirements have been addressed.
- Cleaning and organizing the work area.
- Accounting for company tools, equipment, parts, and materials.
- Removing or properly disposing of installation debris and packaging.
- Returning unused parts, materials, tools, and equipment to their proper locations.
- Recording the work performed, time spent, and materials used in the service ticket.
- Clearly documenting unresolved issues, exceptions, recommendations, and required follow-up work.
Before leaving the job site, the technician must communicate with the customer or designated contact to review the completed work, confirm that the agreed-upon goals were met, and determine whether any additional issues arose during the installation or service visit.
Any unresolved concerns, newly discovered problems, additional requests, or recommended follow-up work must be clearly explained to the customer and documented on the service ticket. When practical, the technician should obtain the customer’s acknowledgment that the work was completed and that the installed or serviced equipment is operating as expected.
Required Qualifications
- Practical, hands-on experience troubleshooting computers, laptops, desktops, peripherals, and common technology issues.
- Ability to understand an assigned task, plan the work, and complete it with limited direct supervision.
- Ability to visualize a completed project and anticipate the tools, equipment, parts, materials, access, and information needed before traveling to the job site.
- Demonstrated persistence and resourcefulness when the original plan encounters an obstacle.
- Sound judgment regarding when to continue independently and when safety, security, scope, or authorization requires escalation.
- Dependable attendance and the ability to arrive at work and customer appointments as scheduled.
- Ability to commute reliably to our office in Storm Lake, Iowa.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to customer locations, primarily within approximately 70–100 miles of Storm Lake.
- Ability to respond to after-hours issues, including occasional on-site visits, while assigned to the on-call rotation.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to document work as it is performed.
- Professional communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of customer, business, and law-enforcement information.
- Ability to follow technical, safety, physical-security, and information-security requirements.
- Willingness to ask questions or escalate an issue when additional direction or authorization is genuinely needed.
Physical and Elevated Work Requirements
With or without reasonable accommodation, the employee must be able to perform the physical duties of the position, including standing for extended periods, walking, bending, reaching, climbing, maintaining balance, and lifting or carrying computers, tools, equipment, and installation materials.
The position requires the ability to safely perform work at elevated heights of up to approximately 50 feet using approved access equipment and required fall-protection systems. Elevated work may require climbing, maintaining balance, using tools, handling materials, and remaining in an elevated work position for extended periods.
The employee must be willing and able to complete required safety training and consistently follow applicable equipment, fall-protection, and job-site safety procedures.
CJIS and Security Requirements
This position may involve access to law-enforcement facilities, systems, and information protected by Criminal Justice Information Services security requirements.
Employment is contingent upon successfully completing all applicable criminal-history screening, background checks, security assessments, training, and access-authorization requirements.
The selected candidate must:
- Successfully complete applicable background screening and security assessments.
- Complete initial and recurring CJIS security-awareness training.
- Follow all applicable CJIS, customer, and company security policies.
- Protect confidential and sensitive information from unauthorized access or disclosure.
- Maintain continued eligibility for required facility and system access throughout employment.
An inability to obtain or maintain required security authorization may disqualify a candidate from employment or prevent continued assignment to this position.

- Network cabling, termination, labeling, and testing
- Access-control systems
- Security-camera systems
