Docent Job description
Job Summary/Objective: The Reading Science Center is a hands-on science museum for children. Our mission is to foster a love of science through exciting and experiential STEM education for youth in the Greater Reading community.
This is a part time position reporting to the Museum Assistant, available to work up to 25 hours per week. The Docent position will ensure a safe and nurturing environment for the youth in Berks County as they explore the exhibits and the Investigation Stations in The Reading Science Center, on-site field trips, after-school programming, special events and during days we are open to the public. The Reading Science Center offers flexible scheduling for employees. However, staff are required to choose from continually opening shift options for field trips, after-school programming and open hours. Hours vary from week to week, with some weeks offering up to 25 hours and others potentially offering zero hours if the employee's availability does not match up with scheduled field trips and open hours. Employees must be able to accommodate this fluctuation in hours.
Essential Functions/Duties: Under the supervision of the Museum Assistant, the essential functions include but are not limited to:
Actively guide visitors through our hands-on museum using inquiry and encouragement to maximize learning and fun during events such as:
- Monday/Friday/Saturday open hours
- Field Trips (week days)
- Birthday Parties (saturdays)
- Scouting events (variable)
- Checking patrons at Registration
- Gift Shop sales
- Field Trip prep work
Competencies

3. Customer Service - delivers exceptional customer service and customer-centric solutions.
4. Basic computer skills and familiarity with Square or similar Point-of-Sale system
5. Experience and/or interest in STEM preferred.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
- Must pass PA State Police, Childline Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint background checks and clearances.

- Bi-Lingual preferred (in Spanish)
