Position Title: School Security Guard - 10-month

Reports To: Lead School Security Guard and the Director of Safe Schools

Position Goal: Under supervision, performs routine safety and security duties throughout the District by, among other things, maintaining high visibility on school property to prevent and respond to situations that place at risk the safety of District students, personnel, and property. Under supervision and direction, conducts and coordinates investigations of violations of district rules and policies within jurisdictional limits of the Reading School District, according to law. Under supervision, performs a variety of administrative and technical duties with regard to student attendance rules and policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties may be assigned.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:

  • The primary function of the position is the performance of routine safety and security to safeguard and protect students, personnel, and property of the Reading School District.
  • Enforces the rules and regulations of the Reading School District by patrolling the district buildings and grounds to safeguard and protect the personnel, students, and property against tampering, safety violations, stealing, use of drugs/alcohol, weapons, littering, loitering or any other misconduct.
  • Conducts patrol inspections of doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
  • Confronts unauthorized persons for questioning, routes or detains them or calls police for assistance, according to established emergency action plan.
  • Sounds fire signal to alert fire department and school personnel in the event of a fire.
  • Stays alert for irregular or unusual conditions or activities, fire, and safety hazards, potential for theft, violations of drug and alcohol laws.
  • Checks for unauthorized personnel on Reading School District property. Has a plan of action against potential harm to personnel, students, and visitors of the Reading School District.
  • Assists in any follow-up investigation being conducted by the District, including interviewing.
  • Follows assigned procedures for maintaining, and signing-in/out of all /district issued equipment and reports any problems with said equipment when appropriate.
  • Is expected to handle duties or responsibilities as they arise, with the approval of the proper authority.
  • Is prompt and on time with regard to his/her assigned work schedule, meetings, or other functions.
  • Is constantly alert for irregular or unusual conditions or activities.
  • Is aware and is always planning against potential harm to personnel or students or visitors of the Reading School District.
  • Permits only authorized materials to enter in or out of the premises.
  • Changes locks on student lockers.
  • Monitors and reviews security system and electronic video equipment.
  • Operates digital and video cameras.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee. This job description does not constitute an exhaustive list of responsibilities and that management may revise it at any time.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Associates Degree Or Advanced Degree Preferred

Previous Law Enforcement, Military or Security Experience Preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Pennsylvania Drivers License preferred

CPR/First Aid/AED, or eligible to obtain certification

Crisis prevention and intervention response training/certification as determined by RSD

NASRO Basic School Resource Officer Course or an equivalent course as determined by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) (PA's Act 67 (2019)) – or eligible to complete prior to entering upon the duties of the position

Language Skills

  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English an asset, but not required

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply by 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions for practical situations.

  • Ability to gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.

  • Ability to sit at a desk/table for limited periods of time and to talk or hear and operate a computer.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and stoop for extended periods of time.
  • Ability required to intervene in physical disputes.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical and subsequent fitness for duty evaluations if such is recommended by the administration.

  • Must have a safe driving record, if any record
  • May be required to travel.
  • Must pass background investigation.
  • Must attend required trainings and/or conferences.
  • Ability to complete mandatory overtime assignments, with notice.

Terms Of Employment

Full-time 12-month or 10-month non-exempt position. Salary and benefits determined by appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
