Position Summary:

 

The REACH School Counselor provides comprehensive counseling services that support the academic, career, personal, and social development of students in a charter high school setting. Working collaboratively with staff, families, and community partners, the School Counselor implements a developmental, data-driven counseling program that fosters students’ holistic success and well-being. This role contributes to school climate, college and career readiness, crisis intervention, and student advocacy.

 

 

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Student Counseling & Support

  • Provide individual and group counseling to address academic planning, personal/social issues, career development, transition support, and crisis intervention.
  • Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with national models (e.g., ASCA) and Georgia student development needs.
  • Assist students with course selection, graduation planning, and preparation for post-secondary options, including college and career pathways.
  • Monitor and support student academic progress, attendance, behavior, and engagement; coordinate interventions as needed.
  • Facilitate classroom guidance lessons, workshops, and presentations on topics such as study skills, stress management, social skills, and career exploration.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Consult with teachers, administrators, support staff, and families to support student success and address barriers to learning.
  • Serve as a resource on student development, counseling strategies, behavior management, and referral resources.
  • Coordinate with community agencies and mental health professionals to provide appropriate services and referrals.
  • Coordinate with local colleges and universities so students have access to dual enrollment provided by those institutions.
  • Supporting students with dual enrollment completion.

Recordkeeping & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records, case notes, and documentation in accordance with state and federal privacy laws.
  • Use data to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling services and contribute to school improvement efforts.
  • Participate in required meetings, team planning, and professional development.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of adolescent development, social-emotional learning, and mental health best practices for high school students.
  • Knowledge of Georgia graduation requirements, postsecondary readiness pathways, and college/career planning resources.
  • Working knowledge of the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) and Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) regulations impacting school counseling.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to student privacy and services (FERPA, IDEA, Section 504).
  • Understanding trauma-informed practices, crisis response, and student wellness supports.
  • Familiarity with comprehensive school counseling models (e.g., ASCA National Model).
  • Effective communication skills with students, families, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to analyze academic, attendance, and behavioral data to guide interventions and programming.
  • Organizational and time-management skills to balance caseloads, documentation, and student support needs.
  • Build trusting, supportive relationships with diverse student populations.
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, special education staff, and outside agencies.
  • Advocate for students while maintaining compliance with school policies and state regulations.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively during student crises or emergencies.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team-based school culture. 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Preferred master’s degree or higher in School Counseling, Guidance Counseling, or a closely related counseling field from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) School Counselor Certificate (P-12), OR the ability to obtain certification prior to employment.
  • Ability to pass background checks and fingerprint clearance per Georgia school employment regulations.
  • Preferred experience as a school counselor in a high school, charter, or public-school setting.
  • Knowledge of college admissions, financial aid processes, and career planning tools.
  • Preferred training or experience in trauma-informed practices, restorative approaches, or multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).
  • Preferred familiarity with counseling assessment tools, electronic student information systems, and college/career readiness platforms.
  • Preferred multilingual skills and experience with diverse student populations.

 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods and move throughout the building to observe classrooms and activities.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally (books, materials, equipment).
  • Work may include occasional evening or weekend hours for events, meetings, or emergencies.
