    RE-1 Valley School District is seeking a highly collaborative and experienced Special Education Mentor to support special education teachers and programs at the elementary and high school levels. This position focuses on mentoring staff, supporting instructional practices, ensuring compliance with special education regulations, and strengthening services for students with disabilities.
    The Special Education Mentor works closely with teachers, administrators, and the Special Services department to build capacity, provide coaching, and ensure high-quality special education programming across the district.

    REPORTS TO: Builidng Principals & Director of Student Services

    SALARY RANGE & CATEGORY: $44,000 - $65,853 on Teacher Salary Schedule

    FLSA STATUS: Exempt

    WORK CALENDAR: 167 days

    FTE: 1.0

    Full-time with benefits; 4-day school week (Tuesday - Friday)


    POSITION SUMMARY: The Special Education Mentor supports the development of high-quality special education services by mentoring teachers, providing instructional guidance, and assisting with program implementation and compliance. This position helps strengthen special education programming while supporting student success and staff development.

    Essential Duties
    • Provide mentoring and coaching for new and experienced special education teachers
    • Assist teachers in developing legally compliant and instructionally meaningful IEPs
    • Support implementation of accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies
    • Assist with interpreting evaluation data and connecting it to student programming
    • Support teachers in monitoring student progress and maintaining accurate documentation
    • Collaborate with building leadership and special services staff to address program needs
    • Provide modeling of instructional strategies and classroom supports when appropriate
    • Assist with district professional development related to special education practices
    • Support teams in addressing challenging student situations or complex cases
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Strong knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance
    • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies for students with disabilities
    • Ability to mentor, coach, and support adult learners
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills
    • Ability to analyze data and support progress monitoring practices
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional integrity
    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
    • Ability to move between school buildings and classrooms
    • Ability to observe classroom instruction and support instructional environments
    • Ability to use standard office and educational technology
    • Travel between elementary and high school buildings within the district may be required
    • Frequent collaboration with teachers, administrators, and multidisciplinary teams
    • Work may include classroom observations and mentoring sessions

    Professional Responsibilities

    Education & Experience
    • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Special Education or related field preferred
    • Current Colorado Department of Education Special Education License
    • Minimum of three years successful experience as a special education teacher preferred
    • Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance
    • Strong collaboration, coaching, and communication skills
    • CPI or crisis prevention training required
    • Bilingual skills preferred

    Evaluation
    Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and the Colorado Teacher Evaluation System.

    Caliche Elementary and Caliche Jr/Sr High School, located outside Iliff, CO, are a part of RE-1 Valley School District. The District Administration Center is located in Sterling, CO (Logan County) in the Northeastern corner of Colorado on Interstate 76 alongside the Platte River. Having the largest population, approximately 13,900, in Logan County and much of the surrounding area, Sterling offers shopping, restaurants, numerous parks, a recreation center, access to medical care and is located near North Sterling Reservoir.
