Position Overview: We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Bookkeeper to join our team at our Newburgh Office.
Position Summary
The Bookkeeper – Government Audit supports the audit team by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing schedules, reconciling accounts, and assisting with compliance requirements for governmental entities. This role ensures financial data is organized, complete, and audit-ready in accordance with applicable governmental accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts for governmental entities
- Prepare bank, cash, and investment reconciliations
- Record journal entries and adjust entries as directed
- Assist in preparation of trial balances and supporting schedules
- Maintain grant tracking and restricted fund accounting records
- Prepare accounts payable and receivable reports
- Assist with payroll reporting and related reconciliations
- Organize and maintain audit documentation and workpapers
- Support preparation of financial statements in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards
- Assist auditors with data requests and provide timely documentation
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements
- Support preparation of Single Audit documentation (if applicable)
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
- 2 years bookkeeping or governmental accounting experience preferred
- Knowledge of fund accounting principles
- Familiarity with governmental financial reporting requirements
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a structured environment
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with municipalities, school districts, or nonprofit entities
- Familiarity with federal grant compliance
- Exposure to annual audit preparation processes
