Quality Engineer II

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Quality Engineer II at Sargent Aerospace & Defense, you will work at our Tucson, AZ facility on an onsite schedule and report directly to the Quality Manager. In this role, you will independently support and lead quality engineering initiatives to ensure products, processes, and quality systems consistently meet customer requirements, regulatory standards, and internal expectations across the Aerospace & Defense and Marine business units.

The Quality Engineer II is responsible for driving product and process quality throughout the product lifecycle, including design support, manufacturing, inspection, testing, nonconformance management, corrective action, risk assessment, and continuous improvement activities. Leveraging expertise in quality systems, manufacturing processes, engineering requirements, and data-driven problem-solving methodologies, this role collaborates with Operations, Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and customers to improve product quality, operational performance, compliance, and customer satisfaction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead quality engineering activities supporting manufacturing, assembly, testing, and inspection operations across Aerospace, Defense, and Marine product lines.
  • Ensure compliance with customer requirements, engineering specifications, industry standards, military specifications, and regulatory requirements, including AS9100 and ISO 9001.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues related to production, customer complaints, field returns, warranty claims, supplier escapes, and internal nonconformances.
  • Drive structured problem-solving methodologies (i.e. FEMAs, 8D’s, A3’s, DMAIC, FTA, etc...) and root cause analysis tools (i.e. Pareto / Tred Analysis, 5-Whys, Ishikawa, SPC, etc...) to identify causes of quality issues and support effective corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Operations, and Program Management teams to address quality concerns and improve product reliability.
  • Development and implement inspection methods, acceptance criteria, and quality plans.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, specifications, quality requirements, inspection plans, control plans, AS9102 First Article Inspection, customer specifications, manufacturing documentation, inspection procedures, quality records, process validation data as required and manufacturing documentation to ensure compliance.
  • Participate and support APQP and PPAP activities across NPI and Work Transfers processes.
  • Conduct Manufacturing Product Audits and assist with Layered Process Audits and Quality Management System audits.
  • Analyze quality performance metrics and trends to identify improvement opportunities and support operational excellence initiatives.
  • Reinforce in Material Review Board (MRB) activities and disposition processes for nonconforming material.
  • Support validation and verification activities for manufacturing and special processes, including welding, heat treating, plating, coatings, machining, and NDT as applicable.
  • Lead and support Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Capability, increasing efficiency, and enhancing customer satisfaction.
  • Support customer audits, source inspections, regulatory assessments, and external audits conducted by customers, registrars, or government agencies.
  • Travel as required to support supplier visits, customer meetings, audits, training, investigations, and business needs.

 

Travel Requirement: Up to 10% travel.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field; or Associate degree in Engineering or a related technical field with a minimum of two (2) years of manufacturing, quality, or engineering-related experience.
  • Working knowledge of Quality Management Systems including AS9100, ISO 9001, and applicable aerospace, defense, or marine quality standards.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing and quality systems in a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, military standards, and GD&T requirements.
  • Working knowledge of First Article Inspection (AS9102), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), FMEA, Control Plans, and process validation methods.
  • Experience with corrective action systems and structured root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, assembly, fabrication, welding, and testing operations.
  • Experience analyzing quality and manufacturing data to identify trends and drive improvements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to obtain Internal Auditor certification within two (2) years of employment.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, including local, domestic, and international travel as required.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Aerospace, or Quality Engineering.
  • Experience working within Aerospace & Defense, Marine, Naval Nuclear, Shipbuilding, or other highly regulated manufacturing industries.
  • Experience supporting military, defense, aerospace, naval, or government contract programs.
  • AS9100 Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor certification.
  • Experience with First Article Inspection (AS9102), APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, and Control Plans.
  • Knowledge of FAA, DoD, NAVSEA, Naval Nuclear, and customer-specific quality requirements.
  • Experience with special processes including welding, heat treatment, plating, coatings, nondestructive testing (NDT), and materials testing.
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma Green Belt certification or equivalent continuous improvement training.
  • Experience using ERP, MES, quality management software, and data analysis tools.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
