Job Summary
The General Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, backhoe, rollers and other pieces of equipment. The General Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.
Qualification
Completion of High school diploma or equivalent preferred. At least five (5) years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Must have knowledge and experience of water, sewer and storm installations. Must have the ability to communicate effectively. Must have knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures including but not limited to backing up procedures, use of flagmen and spotters, signage, incident reporting, required personal safety equipment and lifting of heavy loads. Must have some knowledge of equipment operation, cleaning and maintenance requirements.
Essential Functions
· Operates heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage.
· Performs daily safety and maintenance checks.
· Cleans heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
· Ensures heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
· Participates in routine maintenance.
· Practices workplace safety.
· Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or repairs to the supervisor; cleans equipment.
· Performs other routine duties as directed by the Foreman. Other routine duties may be shoveling, cleaning tracks, undercarriages, curbs, asphalt, clearing off grade stakes, spotting and daylighting utilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise levels at the job sites are usually loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
