Job Title: Utility Site Checker

The Utility Site Checker plays a key role in preparing underground utility job sites for construction crews. This position is responsible for conducting pre-flight site inspections, coordinating materials and equipment, and ensuring all job sites are ready for safe and efficient work. The Site Checker also assists with shop organization, deliveries, and general support to field operations as needed. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-flight inspections of underground utility job sites to verify site readiness and identify potential issues.
  • Prepare and submit pre-flight job reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Communicate with homeowners to inform them of upcoming work using door hangers and verbal notifications.
  • Deliver and pick up materials (including gas and electric utility components) as needed from suppliers such as DTE and Consumers Energy.
  • Assist field foremen by providing detailed pre-flight information and trouble reports.
  • Load crew materials each morning, including wire, transformers, conduit, and related supplies.
  • Organize and maintain the shop and yard areas to ensure cleanliness and operational efficiency

Key Deliverables / Outputs: Utility Site Checker

  • Ex: recurring reports, completed inspections, invoices process, project delivered, KPIs met
  • Pre-flight job reports in a timely manner
  • Assist foreman with job site information if needed
  • Load crew materials in the morning (Wire, transformers, conduit, etc.)
  • Performance Expectations / KPI's
  • Ex: Job completion accuracy, budget adherence, on-time delivery, zero safety incident, etc.
  • Pre-flight trouble job reports for one leg deads, open loops, and reconductors. Inform customers of work being performed in their yard for open loops verbally and with door hangers. Deliver equipment and materials when needed from DTE and Consumers. Organize shop and yard when needed.
  • Complete all pre-flight reports accurately and on schedule.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication with field crews, supervisors, and customers.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of underground electrical and utility systems.
  • Uphold all safety protocols and contribute to a zero-incident workplace.
  • Support smooth daily operations through reliability, initiative, and teamwork.
  • Decision-Making & Authority
  • Assess and determine the necessary course of action for trouble jobs and open loops.
  • Report findings and recommendations to supervisors and project managers.
  • Identify and escalate potential safety or operational issues.

Collaboration & Key Cross-Functional Relationships

  • Ex: works closely with Project Manages, Field Super and Supply Chain for scheduling and materials coordination
  • Coordinate with project management, field supervision, and supply chain teams to schedule pre-flights and deliveries.
  • Work closely with yard/supply chain for equipment and material logistics.
  • Provide status updates and reports to supervision.

Skills & Qualifications for Utility Site Check

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with iPad or digital reporting tools.

Preferred

  • Class A CDL
  • Field construction experience.
  • Experience in Underground Utility Distribution work.
  • Strong practical knowledge of electrical systems and DTE/Consumers Energy standards.
  • Systems & Tools Used
  • Vehicle operator (Class A CDL)
  • iPad use
  • PPE

Work Setting & Schedule

Field-based role with regular travel to job sites. Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, with flexibility based on project needs. When pre-flight work is complete, duties may include shop support, material handling, and yard maintenance.

Growth & Development Path

This role offers opportunities to refine and improve pre-flight processes, ensuring crews receive accurate, timely information. Successful Site Checkers may advance into supervisory or field operations management positions.

  • Ex: OSHA 30, CDL, Journeyman license, DOT compliance training, etc.
  • OJT

  • Signal Tech
  • UU Technician
