Overview

The Master Electrician plays a critical role in delivering high-quality electrical services to member-owners of the cooperative. This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial electrical systems. In addition to traditional electrical work, the Master Electrician will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for distributed energy resources (DERs), including backup generators, electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), behind-the-meter (BTM) solar, and battery storage systems. The role involves close interaction with member-owners to ensure safe, efficient, and code-compliant integration of DER technologies into the Cooperative’s grid infrastructure. This position is with RE Comm, a for-profit affiliate of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.


Role and Responsibilities

Electrical Services

  • Perform residential and commercial electrical repairs, upgrades, and new installations in compliance with local, state, and national codes.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues/circuitry to ensure reliable service for cooperative members.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high professional standard.


Estimating and Project Planning:

  • Conduct site visits and project assessments to prepare accurate labor and material estimates for electrical and DER-related projects.
  • Collaborate with member-owners, engineering staff, and other departments to scope work and plan installations.
  • Maintain clear communication with members and Energy Solutions staff regarding job timelines, cost estimates, and potential impacts to members’ service.
  • Follow up on estimates and projects routinely to maintain positive engagement with members.

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to install, integrate, and operate DER systems including but limited to backup generators and associated apparatus, EV charging stations (EVSE), Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and Battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Conduct site assessments and consultations with member-owners interested in DER technologies.
  • Coordinate with engineering and operational staff to ensure grid compatibility and load impact analysis for DER integration.
  • Perform net meter inspections and verification to ensure proper interconnections and metering for member accounts.
  • Resolve concerns and/or issues with net metering accounts relating to existing and new interconnected or paralleled DER devices.

Member Engagement

  • Serve as a key liaison between the cooperative and its member-owners, providing education and support for energy efficiency and DER programs.
  • Assist members in understanding permitting requirements for DER installations.
  • Represent the cooperative in a professional, courteous, and knowledgeable manner.

Materials, Tools, & Vehicle Management

  • Manage assigned vehicle materials, tools, and equipment needed for job completion, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and minimizing delays.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well stocked work vehicle and job site.
  • Coordinate with departmental supervisor to ensure availability of critical parts and supplies.

Compliance

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including service orders, inspection reports, and other cooperative administrative and safety documents.
  • Stay informed of changes in local codes, national electric standards, and emerging DER technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with all REC safety policies and procedures.

Required skills and Competencies

  • Interpersonal: Must possess clear and professional communication skills, collaboration across all departments and vendors, ability to clearly explain technical concepts in layman’s terms, conflict resolution, and experience in problem solving, training, and mentoring.
  • Technological: Must possess proficiency in electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics. Must have expert level knowledge in all residential and commercial electrical systems. Must possess basic building construction knowledge along with other building systems associated and /or powered by electrical equipment. Must have hands-on experience with DER technologies such as solar, battery, EVSE, BESS and PV systems. Must have familiarity with smart metering systems and interconnection standards. Must be proficient in reading blueprints, schematics, and one-line diagrams. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office systems and software and REC tools, mobile apps, and digital forms.
  • Decision Making: Possess the ability to critically evaluate and think to make electrical and project related decisions with minimal supervision. A strong understanding of code compliance and possess a level of autonomy and decisiveness in field related situations is crucial to job success.
  • Organizational: Possess strong time management and job prioritization, accurate project scoping and estimating. Experience in managing permitting and inspection processes.   • Leadership: Ability to lead by example in cooperative core values and professionalism. Promote a strong safety culture that aligns with REC core policies and practices. Support skill development through team mentorship and coaching.


Qualifications and Education Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is required, along with a Master Electrician license. Courses in commercial subjects such as typing, bookkeeping, and business math are preferred, and some college-level coursework is desired. Within the first three years of employment, the successful candidate must obtain professional certifications including the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) certification and NABCEP Board Certification for PV service, design, and installations. Additional training may include factory or specialized courses in air-cooled generator installation, service, and design; battery energy storage systems; building science; basic first aid and CPR; as well as any REC training courses assigned by a supervisor. Candidates must also have at least eight years of experience in the electrical trade with a Master Electrician license, and at least four years of experience in the electrical utility industry. The role requires working closely with member-owners and the general public, and the ability to lift and carry items exceeding seventy pounds.


This position supports all Vividly Brighter® branded products and services to ensure high member satisfaction, while also assisting with demand response field activities such as AC switches, water heater switches and repairs, and the installation or removal of REC-installed curtailment devices. It provides support to the Member Services department by offering energy advice and conducting field consultations to address member concerns regarding high usage. The role actively participates in a variety of REC community events—including educational programs, member engagement initiatives, and annual REC events—throughout the service territory. Additional responsibilities include mentoring and training apprentice and journeyman electricians, performing routine and storm-related outage response duties to restore member accounts, and supporting behind-the-meter services connected to or following outage events. Other duties may be assigned as needed.


Must be able and willing to work in all types of weather conditions. Must be willing to work various shifts and overtime as required. Must be willing to work in crawl spaces, attics, on ladders and in member’s houses. Normal office conditions, with generally regular hours of work. However, various aspects of the job require evening, weekends and holiday work. Must attend at least two (2) professional development activities such as a conference, workshop, or continuing education course each year. Occasional out-of-state travel for conferences, meetings, or workshops may be required.
