OVERVIEW
The Substation Engineer III/IV is responsible for reviewing designed projects to include checking onelines, schematics, detailed wiring drawings and P&C drawings to provide QA/QC for projects that have been designed by contracted Engineering firms. It will also prepare engineering and design in-house for the construction of new as well as upgrades of existing substations.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Conduct engineering design reviews for contracted substation projects and perform QA/QC on checklists, one lines, schematics, detail wiring diagrams, and nameplates.
· Work with outside engineering firms, consultants, vendors and equipment manufacturers.
· Create standard substation engineering designs to include the design of steel structures, foundations, clearances, layout drawings, grounding, oil containment, lightning protection, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
· Evaluate equipment ratings, requirements and project schedules to facilitate the accurate ordering of equipment to support project in service dates.
· Prepare bills-of-material for the development of material lists to support standard designs.
· Prepare accurate project cost estimates.
· Provide engineering support to employees to assist in their learning of standards, procedures, designs, and specifications.
· Analyze engineering, construction, and maintenance feedback related to standard designs, equipment, etc., and developing appropriate solutions and alternate design options as needed.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
A four-year engineering degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET certified program required. FE certificate is strongly encouraged. PE license is a plus. Ten plus years of experience in a power related engineering field with an emphasis on substation design.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, build strong relationships and resolve conflicts constructively. Must have strong computer skills and have the knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn the AutoCAD Substation Design Suite programs as well as the Microsoft Office Suite. Must have the ability to read and understand physical and P&C prints, plan and profiles, as well as site grading plans. Must have a strong attention to detail, technical writing skills and maintain accurate records. Lead with safety on daily basis and have strong teamwork skills.
Prepare and file applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits when necessary. Review manufacturer drawings for compliance with REC’s specifications. Ensure REC’s design standards and equipment specifications are adhered to and recommended updates as needed to align with industry standards and best practices. Develop and review relay settings for substation and transmission assets as needed.
Home office will be considered Fredericksburg but can be domiciled in another district if office space is available at the discretion of the Director of Substation, Transmission Engineering and Technical Services. This position may also be considered for hybrid work.
Most work will be done in an office setting but must be able to drive to jobsites with varying types of terrain and work in any type of weather. Occasional travel for training will be required. In cases of outages or emergencies, work availability may be 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This position may be filled at the Substation Engineer III or IV level, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
