Job Description

 

Position Title: Speech-Language Pathologist
Reports To: Director of Special Education / Building Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Position Summary

The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and consultative services for students with speech, language, voice, fluency, and communication disorders. The SLP works collaboratively with teachers, families, administrators, and related service providers to support student success and ensure compliance with federal, state, and division regulations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess and identify students with communication disorders through screenings, evaluations, and standardized testing.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education program (IEP) goals and objectives related to speech and language needs.
  • Provide direct and indirect therapy services to students in individual, small group, or classroom settings.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to support instructional strategies that enhance communication skills across the curriculum.
  • Consult with parents/guardians regarding student progress, intervention strategies, and ways to support communication at home.
  • Maintain accurate records, progress notes, Medicaid billing (if applicable), and documentation in compliance with division, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Participate in eligibility meetings, IEP meetings, and multidisciplinary team conferences.
  • Provide professional development and training to school staff on topics related to speech and language development.
  • Stay current with best practices, instructional strategies, and legal requirements related to speech-language services in schools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education or building administrator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of child development, communication disorders, and evidence-based therapy practices.
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical skills in speech and language pathology.
  • Ability to develop and implement IEPs in compliance with IDEA regulations.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage a caseload across multiple schools and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Competence with technology for documentation, data collection, and therapy tools.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders from an accredited program.
  • Current Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology license (or eligibility).
  • Virginia Department of Education Pupil Personnel Services License with an endorsement in Speech-Language Pathology (or eligibility).
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA preferred.
  • Experience in a public school setting preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Duties performed in school settings with students ages Pre-K through 12.
  • May involve travel between schools within the division.
  • Regular lifting, carrying of materials, and occasional physical support of students may be required.

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the school division’s personnel evaluation plan.
