OVERVIEW

Develops, implements, coordinates, and monitors individual treatment and service plans, provides support, therapy and advocacy for individuals having serious and persistent substance use disorders, serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders. Provides direct care in the agency's intensive therapeutic intervention, case management and educational services to substance abusive individuals less than eighteen years of age and their families and children of substance abusing parents referred by the Juvenile Recovery Treatment Court.

Provides therapeutic intervention and case management services for substance abusing individuals over the age eighteen referred by the Adult Recovery Treatment Court. Provides therapeutic intervention and case management services for individuals with a serious mental illness or co-occurring diagnosis in the Spotsylvania Behavioral Health Docket and Fredericksburg Therapeutic Docket. Provides therapeutic intervention and case management services for substance abusive individuals or co-occurring diagnosis in the Rappahannock Veterans Docket.

Work is performed under general supervision and is guided by agency policies and procedures, quality assurance, public and private payor guidelines, diagnostic guidelines and professional practices and including ethical standards related to client interactions, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts intake interviews, documents assessments and develops diag­nosis and treatment plans.
  • Provides problem‑solving, psycho-education, and sup­portive therapy to individuals and families through individual, family and group sessions.
  • Provides individuals with referrals to community resources.
  • Counsels and provides educational programming to the individual's parents in the Juvenile Recovery Court program.
  • Coordinates individual entry, discharge and aftercare relating to detoxification, residential substance use treatment programs, and transitional housing.
  • Provides crisis intervention services and risk assessments.
  • Inputs psychological data to agency staff for individual placements, care and treatment.
  • Consults and coordinates with agency treatment staff and representatives of other agencies or programs; makes referrals, and provides and coordinates individual case management services.
  • Conducts group, individual and family therapy sessions including substance use group therapy.
  • Prepares lesson plan and training materials for education­al/treatment programming.
  • Prepares and maintains case documentation including treatment plans, progress notes and periodic assessments.
  • Consults with school and juvenile court officials, agency treatment staff and representatives of other agencies or programs and provides and coordinates individual case manage­ment services including outreach and discharge planning.
  • Performs community outreach and makes professional and educational presentations to agency, staff and the public.
  • Provides expert testimony in court and legal proceedings.
  • Refers individuals to inpatient treatment providers and assists newly discharged individuals.
  • Attends in-service training and staff development programs.
  • Does related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents who are victim of substance abusive behaviors and/or are substance abusive and their families including counseling practices, techniques and multiple treatment modali­ties
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of child and adolescent psychology, physical and intellectual development
  • Thorough knowledge of substance use disorders as they relate to trauma victims and their families
  • Thorough knowledge of social casework principles, practices and techniques, as well as thorough knowledge of diagnosis as it relates to the DSM-5
  • Thorough knowledge of treatment modalities and interventions as they relate to individual, group and family therapy, counseling practices and techniques applicable to the substance use/chemically dependent and mental health population
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and manifestations of substance use disorders on family, group dynamics, parenting and child development
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of family and group dynamics; thorough knowledge of the service and treatment providers, other agencies and community organizations providing services to the individual population
  • Considerable knowledge of individual manage­ment guidelines for Virginia
  • Considerable knowledge of social casework management, including need assessment and supportive level counseling; ability to complete assessments, provide individual, group, and family therapy
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with the individual population
  • Ability to conduct effective interviews, observe, assess and record individual behaviors and functioning and develop treatment and service plans
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff of other private and public agencies and organizations
  • Ability to confidently provide expert testimony in both oral and written formats
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to operate a vehicle
  • Ability to function calmly in stressful situa­tions
  • Ability to prepare and maintain detailed records and prepare related reports

Required

TYPICAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Master's Degree in the Behavioral Sciences
  • Some clini­cal work experience in the treatment of the mentally ill or substance abusing populations

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required

  • Valid VA driver's license
  • Licensed or License Eligible as LCSW, LPC, or LCP in Virginia

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL EXPOSURE

Work involves some exposure to disagreeable environmental conditions such as the requirement to intensely interact with challenging and potentially hostile and aggressive individuals having unsanitary behaviors, poor hygiene and/or contagious illness; drive a vehicle in inclement, if not severe weather. Work involves going into juvenile participants homes for therapy sessions.
