Under the general supervision of Surgical Services Director, the Sterile Processing Supervisor is responsible for processing instrument trays, maintaining sterilizers, maintaining sterilization logbooks, overseeing sterile processing technicians, and processing other supplies necessary for surgical and/or procedures according to AAMI, AORN and Joint Commission standards.

Job Summary And Qualifications
Under the general supervision of Surgical Services Director, the Sterile Processing Supervisor is responsible for processing instrument trays, maintaining sterilizers, maintaining sterilization logbooks, overseeing sterile processing technicians, and processing other supplies necessary for surgical and/or procedures according to AAMI, AORN and Joint Commission standards.
What you will do:
- Provides direction and supervision to technicians assigned to the sterile processing department
- Sets up and maintains instrument trays for minor and major surgical procedures to ensure accuracy and completion of trays Gains, maintains and applies knowledge of specialized instruments, equipment and supplies used in sterile processing.
- Oversees and ensures staff follow defined guidelines
- Ensures that prepared instrument trays and equipment are processed for sterility
- Ensures that all sterilized items have required sterility monitors to validate effectiveness of sterile processing
- Maintains accurate records of all sterilization procedures(in the main instrument room and all sub-sterile rooms) with immediate notification of the OR Director, if any variances are noted or suspected
- Ensures accurate labelling of instruments and supplies Organizes instruments, equipment, and supplies for efficient access
- Ensures that preventive maintenance and quality controls are provided for sterilization equipment
- Organizes and participates in call rotation coverage for sterile processing
- Applies safety procedures, universal precautions, and principles of asepsis in all actions
- Ensures adequate amounts of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the Surgical Coordinator. Performs reordering, restocking within defined parameters
- Coordinates to ensure same processes are used in C-Section sterile processing as in Main OR
- Develops and maintains instrument inventory records and count sheets
- Applies universal precautions according to potential exposure routes. Wears indicated protective barriers without supervision or reminders
- Demonstrates effective handwashing, performed at task appropriate intervals
- Uses hospital approved cleaning solutions, chemicals and procedures effectively and according to manufacturer’s recommendations for safety
- Uses appropriate instrument transport, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization techniques in the maintenance of equipment and supplies
- Manages inventory of specific equipment and supplies
- Uses Meditech automation system to perform order entry, communications and to keep abreast of department information
- Coordinates department schedule and priorities with Surgical Coordinator, OR Director and department staff
- Maintains awareness of own limitations, seeks guidance from appropriate coworkers. Does not accept inappropriate delegated assignments
- Alerts for errors in own or others work, participates in corrective actions
- Maintains proficiency in own job duties, cross-trains to other duties as appropriate. Identifies inservice/learning activities to enhance job performance and those within the department
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician
- Sterile processing training with certification. Member of professional organization, preferred (AAMI)
- Prefer previous experience as a supervisor in surgical environment
- Certification in accredited sterile processing program
