Camp by the Bay provides campers with memorable waterfront experiences on beautiful Biscayne Bay. Boat Drivers are responsible for safely operating motorboats used for camper transportation, activity support, and safety oversight. This role requires strong judgment, confidence on the water, and a deep commitment to safety, supervision, and professionalism.
Position Description Responsibilities
- Camp by the Bay runs from June 15 to July 24, with a mandatory staff orientation from June 10 to June 12. There will be no camp on June 19 and July 3. Primary daily work hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the possibility of additional after-camp work opportunities until 4:30 p.m. (based on enrollment and staffing needs). Applicants who are not available for the full camp period are still encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire session.
- Safely operate motorboats for all scheduled camp boating activities.
- Maintain full responsibility for vessel operation, navigation, and passenger safety.
- Follow all directions from the Waterfront Director regarding routes, timing, safety procedures, and activity supervision.
- Conduct pre-departure safety checks of boats, fuel levels, equipment, and safety gear.
- Ensure all passengers are properly fitted with life jackets before departure.
- Monitor weather, water conditions, and surroundings to ensure safe boating at all times.
- Assist boating and sailing crew as needed during activities and supervision periods.
- Support safe launching and docking procedures.
- Maintain clear communication with waterfront leadership and staff while on the water.
- Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or incidents promptly.
- Secure, clean, and prepare boats for future use after each session.
Required Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Florida Boater Safety Identification Card (Florida boating license).
- Prior motorboat driving experience required; at least 50 hours of boat operation preferred.
- An on-site boating skills assessment may be required depending on experience level.
- Strong swimming ability required.
- Comfort operating vessels in open-water and active marine environments.
- Ability to remain calm, attentive, and safety-focused in dynamic situations.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Prior experience working with youth preferred but not required.
