Laborer

Summary:

This entry level position will perform a variety of manual tasks involving physical labor at building highway, and heavy construction projects and to assist in safe and efficient paving operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Primary functions will include the use of a variety of hand or powered tools such as shovels, picks, brooms, etc. to clean and prepare site for paving, to remove material or debris from paving site and to assist in paving operations as needed.
• Under supervision, responsibilities will include removing old pavement material, preparing surfaces for build/repair, spreading, compacting and smoothing hot asphaltic material and other road resurfacing applications in connection with street/road maintenance and build/repair projects.
• Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task; properly follow all Company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
• Perform projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or its equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience working outdoors is required.
• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions; communicate with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
• Mechanical aptitude is desirable.
• Previous experience in operating various types of heavy equipment preferred, but not required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, push, pull, climb, bend, and stoop. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work and typical office equipment, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws, and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
