What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer position at Ranfac Corp.?
About Ranfac
Ranfac Corp. is a U.S.-based medical device manufacturer that has been designing and building precision single-use devices in Avon, MA since 1888. That's more than 135 years of American manufacturing. From our 40,000 sq. ft. facility, we handle everything in-house, from design and development to manufacturing and regulatory support, serving customers that range from early-stage startups to blue-chip OEMs.
We specialize in Class I and II single-use devices for markets including orthobiologics, minimally invasive surgery, and hematology. Our products include aspiration and biopsy needles for bone marrow collection, trocars and access systems, and our proprietary Marrow Cellution™ technology. Because we own our full production process (and, since 2023, Cervos Medical), we live and breathe hands-on engineering and custom tooling.
About the Role
We're seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support new product development and drive ongoing manufacturing improvements. This is a role for someone who thrives on autonomy. You'll set your own approach to problems, manage priorities independently, and own projects from start to finish with broad direction rather than day-to-day oversight.
We're looking for a true mechanical engineer, someone whose expertise comes from doing the work and not just studying it. If you learn best at the bench and love designing and building custom tooling and fixtures, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
- Design and fabricate custom tooling, gauges, and fixtures for manufacturing processes and quality testing
- Develop, implement, and maintain manufacturing processes to support new product introductions
- Lead continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and 5S projects to enhance efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness
- Support prototype and final product testing, verification, and validation
- Collaborate across Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Engineering to meet product development and sustaining engineering goals
- Manage and oversee the work of a machinist, aligning output with production and engineering priorities
- Ensure proper documentation, storage, and upkeep of tooling, fixtures, and related process assets
What You Bring (Required)
- 5 to 8 years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience
- Demonstrated, real-world experience designing and building fixtures, with practical shop-floor knowledge and not just coursework (this is key)
- CAD experience, with proficiency in SolidWorks
- Working knowledge of G-code or programming
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to work autonomously, manage priorities, and solve varied problems day to day
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- CAM experience (SolidWorks CAM preferred)
- CNC machining experience
- Basic controls/electrical knowledge to support automation projects

The Environment
