What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineer position at Randerson Technical Staffing?
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer with a strong background in equipment layout and facility design to join their Piping and Mechanical Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing equipment arrangement drawings, 3D plant models, and mechanical design packages for heavy industrial facilities across our client’s core markets.
You'll work directly with mechanical engineers and project managers to translate process requirements and engineering calculations into accurate, constructible equipment layouts — from initial concept through final design. This is a hands-on role for a designer who understands not just how to draw, but how industrial equipment fits together in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed equipment layout and arrangement drawings for industrial facilities including plan views, elevations, sections, and 3D models
- Design and coordinate equipment placement for pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, tanks, boilers, cooling towers, chillers, compressors, and rotating equipment
- Produce facility layout drawings that account for maintenance access, operational clearances, safety requirements, and constructibility
- Develop piping and equipment general arrangement (GA) drawings in coordination with piping designers and engineers
- Support the preparation of process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) as needed
- Coordinate equipment layout with structural, civil, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines to ensure clash-free, integrated designs
- Prepare equipment specification packages, data sheets, and material take-offs to support procurement activities
- Work with vendors and engineers to incorporate equipment dimensional data and nozzle orientations into layout drawings
- Support material handling system layout including conveyors, bins, silos, and bulk material flow paths
- Assist in fume exhaust system and HVAC equipment layout for industrial and commercial facilities
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and client meetings
- Maintain drawing revision control and organized project documentation in accordance with standards
Required Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or related field -- or equivalent professional experience
- 5 years of mechanical design experience with a demonstrated focus on equipment layout in an industrial or process engineering environment
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Inventor
- Solid understanding of industrial equipment types, dimensional requirements, and layout best practices
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, vendor drawings, and engineering specifications
- Experience coordinating equipment layouts across multiple engineering disciplines
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple project deliverables simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in steel, aluminum, chemical, power generation, glass, or oil & gas industries
- Experience with rotating equipment layout including large pumps, compressors, turbines, or motors
- Knowledge of ASME, API, NFPA, and applicable industry equipment standards
- Experience with material handling equipment layout including rotary kilns, conveyors, crushers, screeners, and bulk storage systems
- Background in HVAC or fume exhaust equipment layout for industrial facilities
- Field construction experience or exposure to construction administration activities
