Position Summary
The list created because of this post will be used to fill vacancies in Adult and Juvenile Assistant Probation Offices as well as vacancies that may occur in JDC, RCCF and Field.
Ramsey County requires Assistant Probation Officers working in the Juvenile Detention Center to be at least 21 years old, as a condition of employment set by the county’s Community Corrections Department.
To assist the professional Community Corrections staff in probation, facility, or other case management services by performing designated duties relating to client or resident supervision, treatment, or counseling; maintain records, provide transportation to clients, and perform other duties to support Probation Officers; and perform related duties as assigned.
Field/Adult Facility Probation Officer
The Field Assistant Probation Officer provides support, supervision and oversight of case management services to clients court ordered to supervised probation. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, knowledge of community services and ability to engage and perform duties in a community setting. Field positions are housed in office settings and work is generally conducted during regular business hours however may require client contact in the community and duties performed outside of regular business hours.

- Maintain contact with clients, community providers and collateral contacts.
- Provide clients with needed support and/or assistance in accessing resources necessary to comply with and complete court ordered conditions.
- Monitor and document client compliance with court ordered conditions.
- Monitor, document and respond to violations of court ordered conditions.
- Provide assistance and support to clients encountering obstacles or barriers to success on supervision.
Juvenile Facility Probation Officer
1. Provide safety and security for services and programs of facility residents, staff, and visitors by modeling professional behaviors, adhering to policies and procedures, controlling aggressive behavior under the supervision of supervisory staff, facilitating groups/programming, and supporting the implementation of treatment plans; maintain order, provide first aid, search residents, monitor admissions and releases, screen and monitor visitors to the facility, conduct surveillance and security checks of buildings and grounds, and monitor safety equipment.
2. Supervise residents in activities including treatment programs, school attendance, work activities, court order compliance, compliance with probation conditions; assist with the creation and development of scheduled and structured activities for residents.
3. Intervene early with residents to redirect behaviors into pro-social channels, recognize and reward pro-social behavior; assist residents in managing their own behavior by providing coaching and encouragement.
4. Monitor and document required data concerning resident behavior and treatment progress: school attendance, child abuse allegations or suspicions, facility activities; admit and orient new residents to the facility, administer and record medications, escort residents, provide transportation, compile data, complete required facility documentation, and reports.
5. Interview, counsel residents; make recommendations to Supervisors concerning possible program options and treatment plans; assist in implementing treatment or other programs; administer pre and post-testing to residents; attend treatment programming staffing.
6. Under the direction of a shift supervisor, may be responsible for running and providing direction to a living unit.
7. Assignments require the ability to work shift rotations and mandated overtime to ensure adherence in maintaining minimum staffing requirements in the 24/7 facilities.
8. May transport residents to detention, school, medical appointments, off-grounds activities, court hearings, community service, placement, related activities, or emergencies.
Field/Adult Facility Assistant Probation Officer
1. Meet with clients/residents, review and sign probation agreements, review any special conditions of probation, orient to group programming, connect clients/residents to in-house, and community programming.
2. Meet with clients/residents regarding noncompliance; discuss with clients/residents' ways they can become more successful; make determination of client's/residents’ compliance and report technical violations to Probation Officer or supervisor.
3. Participate in client/resident visits with another staff member on behalf of Probation Officer or unit request.
4. Monitor police contacts and booking notices.
5. Draft probation violations, update custody credit, complete Intake violation packet and discharge orders, document all required data including fax and e-mails into the Chronos system; prepare law enforcement and LEC calendars, gather and submit probation violations to attorneys, and document activity in Court Services Tracking System (CSTS).
6. May staff intake reception window, arrange for chemical assessments, schedule clients/residents for orientation, and assign clients/residents to probation office based on their offense and address.
7. Monitor clients that are in custody, incarcerated, awaiting deportation, on warrant, or have failed to report to probation, or are otherwise unavailable to report to probation.
8. Depending on assignment, may make recommendations to the Probation Officer regarding restitution or victim aide, suggest the amount of restitution and the legitimacy of the request, send affidavits, draft restitution order for Probation Officer review, enter amount ordered in condition and enter restitution payments.
9. May attend treatment program staffing, sentencing and restitution review court hearings.
10. May facilitate group programming.
11. May run BCA checks.
12. May assist in intrastate transfer process.
13. May review and verify client compliance with drug testing, DNA collection, EHM and ignition interlock as ordered.
14. Monitor phone lines and voice messages for incoming phone calls.
15. Monitor CSTS message center.

Juvenile Facility Probation Officer: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Field/Adult Facility Assistant Probation Officer: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ,6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Two years of work experience or post-high school education.
Substitution: Equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Certifications/Licensure: Valid Driver’s License may be required depending on the assignment.
Exam/Screening Process Information
The examination process will consist of the following weighted as indicated:
- Training and Experience Rating = 100%
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who pass the examination/screening process and file a properly completed application shall be placed on the eligible list for employment as a Assistant Probation Officer. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for four months or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted. The names of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of 50 or higher will be forwarded to the department for further consideration.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment.
