Craftsman/Carpenter

Railway Products Group, Inc. has been dedicated to manufacturing quality parts for over 30 years. We make parts and assemblies for passenger trains with metals, composites and other alternative materials in our 50,000 sq.ft. factory.

This position requires a multi-talented individual. The craftsman/carpenter effectively completes hands-on production in our facility, is proficient in various carpentry techniques, possesses a strong work ethic, and is committed to producing high-quality work. This role involves working on diverse projects, which includes custom bathroom and bedroom modules, metal & fiberglass part installation, door assemblies, panel work and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret drawings to determine assembly sequences.
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join materials such as fiberglass, wood, metal, plastic, and plymetal to drawings and work orders.
  • Utilize regular power & hand tools to assemble components using hardware, riveting and various adhesives.
  • Install structures and fixtures such as doors, floorings, mirrors, countertops, railings and lighting in new modules.
  • Build or repair cabinets, doors, framework, and other wooden fixtures.
  • Advises supervisor of the potential production problems experienced from assembly activities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Work jointly with assembly staff to assemble larger components. Includes the packaging of “Kit” material as requested.
  • Responsible to report material shortages from “picked” material to supervisor and to report damaged materials from “picked” material or assembly processes.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with the daily clean-up of all shop areas including moving debris to dumpsters or as directed.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies.
  • Complete other tasks/duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Carpentry Skills: Measuring, cutting, shaping, and joining various materials.
  • Ability to Read Blueprints and Plans: Accurately interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Attention to Detail: Carpenters pay close attention to detail to ensure precise measurements and accurate construction.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: They can troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during construction.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Carpenters often work as part of a team and need to communicate effectively with other employees, supervisors and managers.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as carpenter/craftsman.

Physical Requirements & Stamina

  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to push, pull, and maneuver heavy objects and equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Sufficient physical stamina to perform tasks over a full workday, including repetitive movements.
  • Good hand-eye coordination for using tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate small objects and perform intricate tasks.
  • Ability to maintain balance while working in awkward positions.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb ladders.
  • Full range of motion in the upper and lower body to reach, grasp, and lift.
  • Normal or corrected vision to see details, read instructions, and assess work quality.
  • May involve exposure to cleaning chemicals and other materials (with proper safety precautions).

Hours: M-F 7:30 am – 4 pm (40hrs/wk) at our Baltimore Facility. Work overtime as needed or assigned to complete tasks and/or projects on time.

Pay: $26.00 - $32.00 per hour
