Job Description

This position is responsible for the coordination of a comprehensive approach to substance use prevention programming across the Radford University community. The Substance Use Prevention Coordinator (SUPC) is responsible for developing prevention strategies which include all three levels of risk: universal, selective, and indicated. The prevention programming approach should reduce specific risk factors and strengthen protective factors across the university. This position will utilize nationally identified best practices to inform the development, implementation, and evaluation of substance use/misuse events, education, support, and awareness campaigns. This position will work with the campus community as well as community partners to bring support, awareness, and education through social norms campaigns to reduce the misperceived norm concerning alcohol and other substance use behavior. This position will work closely with the Peer Recovery Coordinator and Peer Support Specialist to educate the community on substance use disorders (SUDs) and strengthen the Recovery-Themed Community.

Job responsibilities will include planning and implementation of outreach programming within the residence halls, classrooms, and across campus through university-wide events and awareness campaigns.

The main responsibilities of this role are:

Develop and oversee comprehensive prevention and educational prevention outreach programming for students as well as the larger campus community;

Develop a university-wide social norms campaign based on data collected through the Healthy Minds Study. Incorporate social norms data across all programming efforts.

Work directly with Student Counseling Services (SCS) and Substance Use and Violence Education Support Services (SAVES) to collaborate on programming efforts and refer students to higher-level of care as needed.

Provide RU Aware level 1-3 educational programming for students referred by Office of Student Standards and Conduct.

Foster collaborative working relationships with campus partners (i.e. Housing & Residential Life, Student Health Services, Student Recreation & Wellness Center, Student Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life);

Establish and foster collaborative working relationships with non-campus partners (i.e, grant partners, community-based services for substance use disorders (SUDs);

Develop and implement program evaluation protocol;

Collect and analyze data related to program evaluation;


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, public health.
  • Experience in providing substance use prevention programming,
  • Strong knowledge of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns (i.e. trauma)

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professional staff and faculty.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational program development and implementation.
  • Exceptional communication and public speaking skills in order to effectively deliver programs and health promotion materials to diverse audiences.
  • Extensive knowledge of current and emerging issues in college health and mental well-being.
  • Excellent organizational skills, proficiency in written and verbal skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other such technology.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends as programs require.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of social norms in prevention campaigns.
  • Experience working with college students in a diverse setting.
  • Work experience with a focus on programs/initiatives to reduce high-risk behaviors.
  • Demonstration of professional writing skills.
  • Experience with program evaluation and data collection.
