Racquet Up Detroit is an out-of-school youth development program that uses the sport of squash, in combination with academic tutoring, literacy development, fitness education, community service, and mentoring to make a lasting positive impact on the lives of Detroit students. Founded in 2010 through a collaboration with the Squash and Education Alliance (SEA), Racquet Up works with 160 fifth through 12grade students and 40 post-secondary graduates.
The organization is currently seeking an energetic and skilled Math Teacher to provide instruction to Rising 8th and 9th graders during Summer Camp. A fully developed curriculum will be supplied, allowing teachers to concentrate on creating enjoyable, meaningful, and effective lessons. This is an excellent chance to foster students’ math development within a supportive and well-organized summer program.
Responsibilities and expectations include, but are not limited to:
- Administer pre and post assessments required for all rising students within 2 days of program start and end; ensure all data is entered into platform
- Teach math to Rising 8th and 9th grade students using a provided curriculum
- Strengthen core math skills such as number sense, problem-solving, operations, fractions, geometry, and pre-algebra, tailored to Rising 8th and 9th grade levels
- Adapt instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles and varying skill levels
- Collaborate with fellow educators and staff to achieve overall program objectives
- Collaborate with ELA teacher on weekly attendance incentives
- Attend planning meetings and contribute to other program-related tasks as needed
- Assess student progress and offer constructive feedback to encourage academic growth
- Track and evaluate student improvement and engagement
- Foster a positive, engaging, and well-organized classroom atmosphere
- Build caring, supportive, meaningful relationships with students
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education and/or teaching certification program
- Must currently be a certified teacher, formerly certified or on path to certification
- Experience teaching math to middle school and/or early high school students
- Strong instructional and classroom management skills
- Ability to implement provided curriculum with flexibility to adapt for student success
- Positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and a passion for teaching
Schedule & Compensation:
Teacher Training:
- Dates (Choose One Option — 17.5 Hours Total):
- Option 1: June 16–18, 2026
- Option 2: June 23–25, 2026
Training Times:
- Monday & Tuesday: 9:00 AM – 3:15 PM
- Wednesday: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Paid Planning Time: 10–20 hours prior to the start of camp
Summer Camp Teaching Schedule:
- Dates: June 29 – July 31, 2026, Monday through Thursday
- Teaching Blocks (Total: 2.5 hours daily):
- 9:10 – 10:25 AM
- 10:25 – 11:40 AM
Daily Planning Blocks (Choose One Option):
- Option 1: 8:10 – 9:10 AM
- Option 2: 11:40 AM – 12:40 PM
Compensation: $50 - 60/hr based on experience and qualifications
Location: The program operates at Racquet Up’s headquarters at 6530 West Outer Drive.
