Listing summary

Run a construction survey crew on roads, bridges, and heavy civil work across the I-81 corridor. Stakeout, layout, and as-builts - this is a construction-focused crew, not a boundary crew.

About the role

Racey Engineering is hiring a Survey Field Crew Chief for construction work. You will run a crew doing construction stakeout and layout on VDOT and municipal transportation projects, bridges, utilities, and private commercial site work, and you will be the person the contractor and the inspector look for when a grade or an offset is in question.

This crew is deliberately construction-focused. If your background is boundary and ALTA work, look at our Survey Crew Chief - Boundary and Mapping posting instead.

What you'll do

  • Lead a field crew performing construction stakeout, layout, control, and as-built surveys.
  • Set and check horizontal and vertical control; verify datum and calibration before layout begins.
  • Operate manual and robotic total stations, levels, and GPS with electronic data collection.
  • Stake roadway alignments, grades, structures, drainage, and utilities from plans and cut sheets.
  • Prepare accurate field notes, record changed conditions, and submit notes and daily time logs per procedure.
  • Coordinate daily with contractors, superintendents, and inspectors on site.
  • Perform quantity topo and earthwork volume shots supporting pay quantities.
  • Maintain and inventory assigned equipment, supplies, and vehicles.
  • Train and mentor instrument operators and field crew assistants.

What you need

  • 5 or more years of construction surveying field experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to run a crew independently on an active construction site.
  • Proficient with robotic total stations and GPS (Leica, and Carlson) and electronic data collection.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, profiles, cross sections, and cut sheets.
  • Working knowledge of VDOT survey and construction requirements.
  • A valid, insurable driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a drug screening.

Nice to have

  • Bridge, heavy civil, and transportation layout experience.
  • Carlson SurveyPC for field data software.
  • OSHA-10 or OSHA-30, MOT, first aid, or CPR certifications.
  • 3D laser scanning experience.
  • Progress toward CST Certifications, Surveyor-in-Training, or PLS licensure - Racey reimburses study courses and exam fees.

Travel and schedule

  • Full-time, 8-hour shifts with overtime and per diem available; this is field work in all seasons.
  • Regular presence on active construction sites and undeveloped terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Travel throughout Virginia with frequent overnight assignments.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screening.
