Position Summary

R.W. Dunteman Company is seeking an experienced Field Superintendent to oversee and manage heavy highway construction projects, including roadway, underground utilities, and site development work. The Superintendent is responsible for field operations, safety leadership, scheduling, quality control, and coordination of crews, subcontractors, and equipment to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution & Field Operations

  • Lead day-to-day on-site construction activities for heavy highway and civil infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials to maintain production goals.
  • Interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents to ensure accurate execution.
  • Maintain project schedules and adjust sequencing to meet milestones.
  • Safety Management
  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings (toolbox talks) and site inspections.
  • Identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and promote a culture of safety accountability.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and direct foremen, operators, laborers, and subcontractors.
  • Provide mentorship, performance feedback, and training to field personnel.
  • Ensure crew productivity and morale are maintained at a high level.
  • Coordination & Communication
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, inspectors, and clients.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of work and materials.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide field status updates.

Quality Control

  • Ensure all work meets project specifications, IDOT standards, and company quality expectations.
  • Review work in progress and completed work for compliance and workmanship.
  • Address deficiencies promptly and implement corrective measures.
  • Scheduling & Cost Control
  • Assist in short-term and long-term planning of project activities.
  • Monitor labor, equipment, and production costs to maintain budget targets.
  • Track quantities and production rates.

Documentation

  • Maintain daily reports including labor, equipment, weather, and production.
  • Document delays, changes, and field adjustments.
  • Support change order documentation and field measurements.

QualificationsRequired

  • 5 years of experience in heavy highway or civil construction.
  • Proven experience as a Superintendent, Foreman, or similar field leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of roadway construction, earthwork, drainage, paving, and/or structures.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.

Preferred

  • Experience working on IDOT or municipal projects.
  • OSHA 30 certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge of union workforce environments.
  • Familiarity with GPS machine control and field technology.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
