Position Summary
We are a rapidly growing underground utility construction company expanding both organically and through strategic acquisitions. We seek a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support the Controller in maintaining accurate financial records and strengthening accounting processes to support scalable growth.
This role supports day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, payroll support, job cost accounting, and financial reporting. The Staff Accountant will assist with month-end close, WIP reporting, compliance requirements, and process standardization across a multi-entity organization.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting & Financial Reporting
Assist with daily accounting operations including general ledger entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, and fixed asset tracking.
Prepare and post journal entries and maintain supporting documentation.
Assist in monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and construction industry standards.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet and other GL accounts as needed.
Support preparation of internal financial reports as needed.
Job Cost Accounting & WIP Support
Assist with detailed job cost accounting at the task and cost-code level. Support preparation of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion revenue calculations. Monitor accounts payable postings to ensure accuracy and proper classification in the general ledger. Assist in tracking over/under billings and retainage balances. Support AIA billing processes and documentation as needed.
Payroll & Compliance Support
Ensure accurate payroll labor cost allocation to jobs. Support certified payroll reporting and prevailing wage compliance (Davis-Bacon) as when needed. Maintain documentation for audits, lender requests, and regulatory compliance.
Audit & Tax Coordination Support
Assist with preparation of schedules and documentation for external audits and financial reviews. Support tax filing processes by gathering requested information for our external tax preparers. Ensure documentation is organized and audit-ready throughout the year.
Process Improvement & Systems Support
Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and internal controls. Support system implementations, integrations, and acquired entity onboarding as directed by the Controller. Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to company accounting policies.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
· 2 years of accounting experience is ideal, but we will consider recent graduates without any experience.
· Basic understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
· Familiarity with job cost accounting and construction accounting concepts preferred.
· Familiarity with accounting or ERP systems.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and desire to continuously improve your Excel skills.
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
