What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Builder position at R D Automation?
Location: Trevor, WI (On-site)
Pay Range: $23–$35/hour (based on skills and experience)
Job Type: Full-Time
Build the Machines No One Else HasWe’re not a production shop. We’re a custom automation company. Nearly everything we build is one-of-a-kind. Our engineers design the systems, our machinists fabricate the parts, and our builders bring them to life.
This role isn’t about repetition—it’s about creativity, craftsmanship, and problem-solving. Most projects are custom-built machines with unique challenges, though we also support a smaller volume of repeat builds and occasional service or upgrade tasks.
What You’ll Do· Build mechanical systems and custom automation equipment from scratch
· Interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, device manuals, and evolving specifications
· Install and align shafts, bearings, sprockets, pulleys, bushings, belts, and chains
· Work with conveyors, indexers, pick-and-place units, and other motion devices
· Route and install pneumatic systems: actuators, manifolds, solenoids, and fittings
· Perform light fabrication using drill press, band saw, lathe, tapping, grinding, and polishing tools
· Identify interference, tolerance, or fit issues and coordinate solutions with engineering or machining teams
· Ensure cleanliness, safety, and performance of builds prior to debug and shipment
What We’re Looking For· 3–5 years of experience building custom machinery or automation systems
· Mechatronics certifications or equivalent technical training a plus
· Skilled with hand tools, precision measurement tools, and fabrication equipment
· Strong understanding of mechanical assemblies, fasteners, tolerances, and fits
· Able to work independently and collaboratively with engineers and electricians
· High attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship
· Must bring your own hand tools appropriate for mechanical machine building
· Basic computer literacy and ability to use Microsoft Office tools (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word)
Why You’ll Like It Here· Most of your time will be spent on truly unique, one-off machine builds
· Some repeat build and light service work keeps things balanced
· You’ll work in a well-equipped shop with a capable, hands-on team
· We value ownership, curiosity, and mechanical intuition
Additional Details· Shop-based role with occasional travel (typically <20%) for installations or service support
· Forklift/hoist operation required (certification preferred)
· Must be able to lift 50 lbs and perform hands-on physical work in a shop environment
If this sounds like your kind of work, we’d like to talk.
