What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pier Master - Port of Davisville position at Quonset Development Corporation?
The Port of Davisville is responsible for the safety and security of the port users and community. The Pier Master, as an agent of the Port, adheres to the Facility Security Plan and Rules and Regulations of Port of Davisville as set by US Coast Guard guidelines. The Pier Master is a primary point of contact between users of the port and port community, cargo operations, and contract security workers. The incumbent will be responsible for establishing security checkpoints and conducting screening operations for personnel and vehicles entering restricted port areas. The Pier Master assists the Port Manager in the daily operation of the Port of Davisville by conducting patrols and inspecting terminals, piers, and infrastructure, and reporting damage or defects to the Facility Security Officer or Maintenance Supervisor. The Pier Master is responsible for maintaining daily and weekly ship schedule arrival records and provides reports to accounting for billing. The Pier Master is a first responder to all requests for police and fire/rescue personnel at the Port of Davisville, and in this capacity, assesses emerging situations, determines a plan of action, and ensures an appropriate response. The Pier Master will also be responsible for limited snow removal, trash pick-up, gate opening and routine maintenance.
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of operational requirements of port facilities.
- Basic understanding of nautical terminologies.
- Ability to do mathematic calculations,
- Ability to remain tactful but firm in enforcing port rules.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, be able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) and related security clearances to access the Port of Davisville’s restricted and secure areas.
Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in criminal justice or marine-related field, such as Marine Transportation or Security; OR
- High school diplomas plus four years’ experience as gained from honorable military service, public safety, security, or employment in a maritime industry.
- Boating experience is a plus! Boat travel will be required.
- First Aid and CPR training preferred but will be provided as needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds at times.
- Must be able to use boarding ramps, climb ladder and walk-up stairs.
- Must be able to work in inclement weather and with usual hazards associated with harbor areas.
- Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to hear and see alarms and potential hazards.
Schedule: Monday – Friday 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, Monday – Friday. Overtime may be required.
Salary range: $23.88 to $29.33 depending on experience.
