SUMMARY:

We are seeking an equity-driven educator to join the Quinn Middle School community as the Grade 5 Dual Language English Language Arts teacher and English Language Development Specialist. This educator will provide English Language Arts instruction to 5th graders in the Dual Language Portuguese Two-Way Immersion program, in addition to providing English as a Second Language support to English Learners throughout the school. This unique role will collaborate with the Portuguese Language Arts teacher, the other Quinn ELD Specialists, and the 5th grade team to deliver high quality standards-based instruction and to create an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and addresses the needs of all learners.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for integrating knowledge of second language acquisition and evidenced based practices for effective Dual Language Program implementation and English as a Second Language instruction.
  2. Plans instruction which lends to the educational growth and development of students.
  3. Responsible for using innovative approaches, and instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn.
  4. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, celebrates cultural differences and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  5. Responsible for effective management of the classroom environment.
  6. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  7. Responsible for mentoring students’ understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusting instruction, materials, or assessments, when appropriate.
  8. Responsible for effective instruction that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students, which includes making appropriate adjustments and modifications to consistently deliver the curriculum in English making learning goals clear to the students, using appropriate instructional and questioning techniques.
  9. Responsible for identification, referral procedures, and accommodations for students requiring Special Education.
  10. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  11. Responsible for the promotion of high standards and expectations for student achievement.
  12. Collaborates with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
  13. Responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
  14. Performance of other reasonably job-related tasks. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field.
  2. Must hold the appropriate DESE issued license in Elementary Education or English Language Arts 5-12.
  3. Must hold the appropriate DESE issued license in ESL.
  4. Familiar with the WIDA standards and how to align them to student learning.
  5. Demonstrate experience working with students of diverse backgrounds with diverse needs in an equitable and inclusive manner.
  6. Demonstrate experience evaluating student skills through writing reports that interpret/summarize findings.
  7. Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and data-collection skills to support student success.
  8. Demonstrate ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  9. Demonstrate strong written and verbal skills for communicating with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community representatives.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Portuguese proficiency of at least Intermediate High.
  2. A minimum of three years teaching experience.
  3. Demonstrate experience supporting students with special needs.
  4. Advance educational preparation in the discipline.
  5. Familiar with literacy development in Portuguese.
  6. Teaching experience in the discipline.
  7. Demonstrate experience with second language acquisition.
  8. Additional content area license (i.e. Special Needs)

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent of Schools in conjunction with the HEA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

WORK YEAR:    

  • 10 months, 183 days
  • 3 personal days, 13 sick days, prorated pursuant to date of hire

  • This is a salaried position distributed over 26 paychecks including a lump sum in June to cover summer pay

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the appropriate administrator in accordance with HEA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement and DESE regulations, 603CMR35.00.

While performing duties of this job, the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have also have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods, and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and the public in person and on the telephone.
