As a Patient Financial Service Specialist, you will serve as a critical support system for patients and families seeking access to healthcare services and financial assistance programs. You will help individuals understand their coverage options, complete insurance enrollments and recertifications, and connect with resources that reduce financial hardship and improve access to care.

Essential Job Functions for the Patient Financial Service Specialist include but are not limited to:

  • Interviews patients to identify sources of payment on all accounts including possible eligibility for Federal, State, and Tribal assistance including but not limited to Medicare, Medicaid, Basic Health, Commercial Insurance, and Private Pay
  • Assist patients in the completion of applications for various health coverage programs
  • Educates patients regarding available options available to them based on their individual circumstances
  • Interprets laws and regulations of Federal, State and Tribal health coverage programs and educate patients regarding eligibility requirements and their rights and obligations in receiving financial services from these programs
  • Makes appropriate referrals to agencies such as the Social Security Administration, private insurance companies and the Employment and Human Services Department to determine patients' eligibility for medical coverage and assists patients in obtaining and submitting necessary Financial documents within time limits specified by the agency
  • Interviews patients to obtain financial information, secure payments and arrange payment plans
  • Follows up on unpaid accounts by communicating with the patient options available to them
  • Maintain accurate patient financial records and documentation
  • Provide support for patients needing financial assistance
  • Assist patients in understanding their financial responsibilities and payment options
  • Verifies insurance coverage and eligibility on an individual basis
  • Collects, verifies, and enters into the billing system all insurance and third-party resources for payment.
  • Assists and informs clients regarding the established treatment process, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring full compliance with all HIPAA and PHI regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Adheres to all QCH and QWC Policies and subscribes to the mission, vision, and values of QCH and QWC
Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in medical billing, patient financial services, Medicaid eligibility, or healthcare customer service
  • Minimum 2 years experience and ability to demonstrate proficiency in the use of electronic medical records (EHR) systems
  • Active Washington State Driver’s License and have the ability to be added to our insurance plan without restrictions.
  • Minimum 1 year experience reviewing and processing patient personal financial documents and interpreting applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to explain complex financial and insurance information in a clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Must have the ability to become a certified Tribal Assister within 1 year of hire
  • Ability to explain charges, services, and insurance coverage details to patients or their representatives
  • Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer, including Microsoft Office programs (i.e. word, excel)
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively explain financial information to patients
  • Knowledge and adherence to state (RCW, WAC) and federal confidentiality regulations (42 CFR part 2). Applicants must always conduct themself ethically and professionally
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and PHI requirements
  • Must pass criminal background investigation, reference inquiry, and pre-employment drug screen

Preferred:

  • Associate’s degree in Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred
  • Experience working with tribal communities preferred

Physical & Mental Requirements:

While performing these job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is required to be able work at a computer work station during their scheduled shift. Employee is required to have in-person interaction with patients. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 

Employee is required to transport themselves from one site to another to perform functions of this position.

Employees must be able to report to work on time and work their full scheduled shift.

Salary : $20 - $31
