Executive Director - Queer Wellness Center

About the Organization

The Queer Wellness Center (QWC) is a nonprofit working to improve access to affirming healthcare, mental health support, and essential resources for LGBTQ individuals across the Upstate. Originally launched as 864 Pride in 2020, the organization transitioned to doing business as QWC in 2023 and continues to grow its programs and community reach. Current programs include:

  • BLOOM: Free counseling groups for LGBTQ youth
  • LEAP: Peer support for transgender individuals
  • Affirm: Cultural competency training for organizations
  • Prisma at QWC: LGBTQ -focused healthcare services
  • Resource Closet: Food and clothing support
  • Scholarships: Financial assistance for care

QWC is in a growth stage, focused on building sustainable funding, strengthening operations, and maintaining strong, community-centered programs.

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) is QWC's lead staff member and is responsible for advancing the mission through fundraising, program oversight, and community partnerships. This is a hands-on operator role. The ED will both set direction and execute day-to-day work across fundraising, operations, and partnerships. Early success will focus on fundraising, stabilizing core programs, and building basic operational systems.

Key Responsibilities

The percentages below reflect how we expect the ED to allocate their time.

Fundraising & Revenue Development (~40%)

  • Lead and execute a practical fundraising strategy
  • Submit consistent, high-quality grant applications aligned with organizational capacity
  • Execute fundraising campaigns and events

Operations & Program Oversight (~30%)

  • Track program participation, outcomes, and basic impact metrics
  • Build simple, sustainable systems for operations and reporting
  • Coordinate with volunteers, partners, and program leads

Community Engagement & Partnerships (~25%)

  • Serve as QWC's primary public representative in the community
  • Build relationships with healthcare providers, nonprofits, donors, and local partners
  • Increase awareness of QWC programs and services
  • Cultivate relationships with individual donors and community supporters

Board Partnership & Governance (~5%)

  • Provide regular updates on finances, programs, and progress
  • Support a working board model, including board engagement in fundraising

First-Year Priorities

  • Fundraising progress: Make meaningful progress toward the annual fundraising goal and build a sustainable pipeline of grants and individual donors
  • Operational foundations: Maintain oversight of all core programs; strengthen key partnerships, including healthcare services; and maintain donor relations and program reporting

Qualifications

We know strong candidates, especially those from marginalized communities, often hesitate to apply unless they meet every listed qualification. If you see yourself in much of this role but not all of it, we encourage you to apply anyway.

Required

  • Demonstrated, ongoing commitment to LGBTQ communities
  • 2 years of experience in nonprofit work, community organizing, or program management
  • 2 years of experience with fundraising, donor relations, or grant writing
  • Strong organizational and self-management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication

Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare, mental health, or social services
  • Familiarity with nonprofit finance and governance
  • Experience working with a board or volunteer-led organization

Compensation & Structure

  • Salary: $41,000–$49,000 base salary, commensurate with experience and scope of role.
  • Hours & classification: This is a part-time, salaried role of 30 hours per week.
  • Outcomes-focused: Because non-profit executive leadership happens largely through relationship-building, community presence, and partnership development, we expect to measure success by deliverables and impact including fundraising, organizational growth, partnerships, and mission outcomes rather than strict hourly tracking.
  • Growth Potential: This role is structured to grow into a full-time Executive Director as fundraising goals are met. The right candidate has the opportunity to shape this role, grow with the organization, and step into long-term leadership of a growing LGBTQ wellness nonprofit.

How to Apply

Please apply through our online application form. You will be asked to provide:

1. Your name, contact information, and preferred pronouns

2. Your resume or CV

3. A cover letter (or written response) describing your interest in QWC and relevant experience

Questions or accessibility needs: If you experience barriers with the online form or have questions about the role or process, please reach out to Careers@queerwellnesscenter.org.

Accessibility & Physical Requirements

This role is primarily in-person in Greenville, SC, with relationship-building and community presence as a core part of the work. Some administrative and meeting time may be performed remotely.

Typical physical demands of the role include:

  • Lifting/carrying: Occasional, may occasionally lift or move materials up to 40 pounds (event supplies such as tents, tables, or resource items)
  • Pushing/pulling: Rare and minimal, typically limited to event setup

Schedule: Executive leadership in a community-centered nonprofit naturally extends beyond a standard weekday schedule. This role includes evening and weekend hours for community events, partner meetings, and visibility work. Hours during June (Pride month) are unconventional and noticeably heavier than other months due to Pride programming and visibility events.

QWC is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to support individuals in performing the essential functions of this role.

Equal Opportunity Statement

QWC is committed to building an inclusive workplace. We strongly encourage applications from LGBTQ individuals, people of color, transgender and nonbinary people, and individuals with lived experience relevant to the communities we serve.
