A school librarian (or library media specialist) is an educator who manages the school library, teaches information literacy and research skills, promotes reading, and collaborates with teachers to support the curriculum. They instruct students in using technology, select and organize library resources, and foster a welcoming, supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities and Roles:
- Library Management: They maintain the collection, which includes ordering, cataloging, and processing new books, managing the budget, and organizing the physical and digital space.
- Instruction: Librarians teach classes on research methods, finding reputable sources, citing sources, digital citizenship, and information literacy.
- Reading Promotion: They foster a love for reading through read-aloud sessions, book recommendations, themed displays, author visits, and events like book fairs.
- Collaboration: They work with classroom teachers to curate resources (books, websites, databases) that align with lesson plans, often helping to find materials for specific projects
