Description:

The Special Victims Bureau Assistant District Attorney will investigate and prosecute felony matters involving sexual assaults against adults and children, child physical abuse, and violence against the elderly.

Job Description:

  • Work as a prosecutor within the Special Victims Bureau of the Major Crimes Division
  • Maintain a vertical caseload of felony matters involving adult and child sexual assaults, felony child physical abuse, and violence against the elderly, with an opportunity over time to develop sub-areas of expertise and focus within Special Victims
  • Collaborate with the NYPD, Queens Child Advocacy Center, and other agencies and organizations to enhance cases at the earliest stages of investigation and prosecution
  • Develop and enhance investigative and trial skills under the supervision of veteran prosecutors with expertise in Special Victims and advanced trial advocacy
  • Participate in continuing skills development trainings related to, among other things, interviewing of child witnesses, abusive head trauma and other forms of serious child physical abuse, forensic sciences, working with traumatized witnesses, and interpreting and forensic use of medical records

Qualifications:

  • Attorney with at least 4 years of experience as a prosecutor in New York State
  • Experience handling felony cases with a preference given to applicants with felony trial experience
  • Strong desire to work with vulnerable populations often experiencing traumatic after-effects of victimization, and ability to effectively and professionally work with advocates and members of the public
  • Desire to develop and refine advanced investigative and trial skills related to major offenses, and to conduct trials of these cases
  • Prior training (or desire to be trained) in advanced prosecution skills including interviewing of children and people with special needs, trauma-informed victim-centered interviewing techniques, forensic DNA and toxicology, working with medical professionals, and forensic psychology/psychiatry
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage a major offense caseload
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Existing knowledge of a prosecutor's discovery obligations under CPL sec. 245

Salary Range: $115,000 to $148,000.
