Quantum Fuel Systems is a leading provider of clean propulsion and fuel storage technologies, specializing in natural gas, hydrogen, and alternative energy systems. We are seeking a Recertification Technician to support trailer recertification operations utilizing Modal Acoustic Emission (MAE) inspection methods, along with service, troubleshooting, and customer support for Quantum products.
JOB PURPOSE
The Level 2 MAE Technician performs and directs acoustic emission inspections with minimal supervision. This role is responsible for test planning, equipment setup, data collection, and report preparation, with an emphasis on ensuring safety and reliability of advanced fuel storage systems along with providing field service and technical support for Quantum products. This position involves troubleshooting, repair, installation, and reporting, both at Quantum facilities and at customer sites. The role requires mechanical aptitude, diagnostic skills, and the ability to follow established procedures to ensure safety, performance, and customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities
In addition to the responsibilities outlined under Level 1 Modal Acoustic Emission (MAE) Technician, the additional responsibilities below are required:
- Plan, organize, and conduct recertification inspections using MAE in accordance with PHMSA, DOT, TC and internal procedures.
- Independently set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot MAE systems.
- Ensure the test equipment is maintained and in good working order.
- Collect, monitor, and record modal acoustic emission data according to written procedures.
- Supervise, mentor, and train Level 1 technicians as needed.
- Document inspection results, prepare technical reports, and communicate findings.
- Approve MAE test results that pass without flags and forward any suspect test results to Level 3 / SRT for further evaluation.
- Support procedure development and continuous improvement of the recertification process and practices.
- Ensure compliance with company quality systems, PHMSA, DOT, TC and customer requirements.
- Troubleshoot and repair Quantum products at company or customer facilities.
- Write incident, service, or test reports and contribute to technical documentation.
- Generate and validate written procedures for service and recertification activities.
- Conduct maintenance and repairs on customer vehicles, trailers, and systems.
- Adopt and implement Quality Assurance Procedures (QAP) and Departmental Work Instructions (DWI)
- Follow all safety, quality, and environmental practices during field operations.
- Travel domestically and internationally to perform service and inspection duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- ASE trade certification, technical school certificate or equivalent required; ASE alternative fuel certification preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to follow detailed procedures.
- Advanced computer skills extending beyond Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Ability to travel frequently and work at customer locations under varying field conditions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be fluent in English (written and verbal).
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
- This role requires the ability to distinguish between colors as part of daily job duties. A post-offer, pre-employment color vision screening will be conducted.
- Must be able to pass the Railroad Commission of Texas (TRRC) CNG Service Installation exam.
Preferred
- Associates degree in an engineering field, or equivalent industry. NDT (Non Destructive Testing) experience accepted.
- Basic understanding of nondestructive testing principles and acoustic emission.
- Certification: MAE Level 1 (per ASNT, ISO 9712, or equivalent) preferred but not required, training will be provided.
- Candidate lives close to the worksite (Midland / Odessa, Texas area).
- Certified by TRRC for CNG Service Installation.
Physical Requirements
This position involves both office and field activities. Duties may require working from heights, standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and working in confined or elevated spaces. Frequent use of hands is required for operating test equipment, sensors, and computers. Vision requirements include color vision, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This role may involve lifting up to 50 pounds, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and extended domestic or international travel.
