Role Summary
The Project Engineer (entry level) assists the estimating team by reviewing civil blueprints, counting and measuring project elements using take-off software, and organizing vendor quotes. This role provides a direct career path toward becoming a Lead Estimator, offering hands-on training in material yield calculations (tons of asphalt, cubic yards of concrete) and local DOT bidding processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform digital take-offs to measure square footage, linear footage, and depth for paving slabs, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
- Review civil engineering plans and cross-sections to assist in calculating basic asphalt tonnage and concrete volume requirements.
- Verify architectural scales and ensure plan measurements match project specifications.
- Organize and track vendor quotes, building comparison matrices to help the team select the most competitive material and trucking rates.
- Assist in preparing bid folders, ensuring all required municipal, private, or DOT compliance forms are filled out completely.
- Assist in tracking project milestones and timelines, ensuring team members have the necessary documentation and resources to meet project deadlines.
- Draft and submit RFIs (Requests for Information) to clarify design ambiguities, missing elevations, or conflicting plan notes.
- Maintain the estimating database, updating historical material pricing index data.
Role Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or an Associate degree in a matching technical field.
- 0–2 years of experience; internship experience with a civil contractor, DOT, or engineering firm is highly preferred.
- Basic understanding or a strong willingness to learn reading blueprints, grading scales, contour lines, and standard math/geometry formulas.
- Exposure to specialized tools like Bluebeam, Blue Book, BuildingConnected, Procore, etc. is a plus.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel.
- A strong curiosity about field operations, asphalt paving techniques, and concrete mix behaviors.
- Methodical approach to data entry and double-checking math calculations to prevent costly errors.
