Position Overview
The Erdman IG Operator uses an Erdman line of equipment to produce Insulated Glass (IG). The operator's role is to coordinate the overall operations of that production line. The IG Operator ensures the quality of each unit is met through each stage in creating the insulated glass. The position will stage glass and ensure each position on the Erdman Line is in a proper place to execute in a safe and timely manner
Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand the daily production goal, on-time complete is a critical number
- Read and decipher paperwork to ensure proper specifications are met for each job, identify job by sales order and line numbers
- Read and comprehend stickers on the glass, properly identify glass by size, window orientation, and Low Emissivity (Low E) - the coating applied to glass to make it more energy efficient
- Learn and maintain knowledge in all aspects of the Erdman line including loading, muntin application and unloading functions, when necessary make required adjustments
- Efficiently and safely perform a repetitive 2-3 step process and retain the steps
- Pull or push glass carts to and from the Erdman line
- Stage glass for the line to use
- Apply Muntin
- Inspect materials and output for any quality defects
- Coordinate with other members of the production line promoting teamwork, encouraging quality & supporting maximum production
- Scan glass carts to ensure all units are complete and ensure any missing glass is located or ordered
- Report production numbers for the Erdman line at the end of each shift, monitor efficiency of the line
- Assist all areas when needed
- Perform daily equipment maintenance to ensure maximum production
- Perform housekeeping to clean machine and work area
- Manage needed repairs - order glass and strategize the timing of repair completion throughout the production shift
- Ensure equipment works correctly, report any defective parts of the Erdman line to maintenance
- Prompt and regular attendance at an assigned work location.
- Interact and communicate with employees and customers in an appropriate manner.
- Availability on site to confer with staff members with whom the employee must interact on a regular basis.
- Review and analyze data and information concerning glass order paperwork.
- Plan, prioritize and monitor activities to produce insulated glass.
- Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Supervisory Responsibility
No direct management or supervisory responsibilities.
Safety
Observe safety and security policies and procedures, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment including but not limited to eye and toe protection, cut proof 5 or greater gloves and safety sleeves. Employees in this position should report potentially unsafe conditions and use equipment and materials properly. Follow job-specific safety requirements such as Safe Product Handling Guidelines, Hand Safety and Safe Lift.
Travel
No travel is required.
Qualifications
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Proficient knowledge of computers and automation systems related to IG processes
- Basic understanding of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) preferred
- Must be able to read and write
- Must be able to accurately read a tape measure
Preferred Education and Experience
An individual is expected to have the minimum level of education and/or related expertise listed here:

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

This is a manufacturing job. The employee must be able to:
- regularly lift, rotate, flip and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds;
- regularly push or pull wheeled carts loaded with glass weighing up to 300 pounds;
- work shifts of at least 8-10 hours, and occasionally longer, for 5-6 days each week; and
- stand for prolonged periods.
Vision abilities required by this job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
It is an essential job function and safety rule, applicable to every employee working in a safety sensitive classified position, to be able to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to climactic variations, fumes or airborne particles, various levels of vibration, and moving mechanical parts. Various different types of Personal Protective Equipment might be required based on the employee's work location. The noise level in the work environment may require hearing protection.
