General Description: The Reading Specialist provides evidence-based literacy intervention services to students and oversees the implementation of the school’s intervention program to ensure high-quality, data-driven support for all learners. The Reading Specialist is vital to ensuring that all students receive the high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction required by the Connecticut Right to Read Act and current state standards. By delivering targeted, direct intervention, this role addresses specific learning gaps and ensures equitable academic opportunities for students. Furthermore, this position provides the specialized expertise necessary to support the school’s intervention program, using data-driven insights to refine instructional practices and improve literacy outcomes across the entire school.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Connecticut Educator Certificate: Remedial Reading & Remedial Language Arts (102) or Reading and Language Arts Consultant (097) endorsement. 
  • Proven track record of successful classroom literacy instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to implement evidence-based reading practices and targeted interventions within a school-wide literacy framework
  • Strong understanding of the Science of Reading
  • Extensive experience in using diagnostic data to drive student growth

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention to targeted students.
  • Design student-specific progress monitoring plans and administer assessments in alignment with the coach-provided schedule.
  • Conduct student-level data analysis to track intervention success.
  • Adjust intervention intensity and methods based on progress monitoring data.
  • Oversee literacy tutors and manage intervention schedules.
  • Lead SRBI/MTSS meetings and handle associated documentation specifically for Tier 2/3 action plans.
  • Administer and interpret diagnostic assessments to pinpoint student deficits.
  • Ensure fidelity of intervention programs and materials.
  • Communicate individual student progress with staff and families.
  • Present at Board of Education meetings on topics related to the elementary literacy program as needed.
  • Attend PPT meetings as necessary.
  • Work closely with the K-5 Literacy Coach to:
    • Review school-wide and grade-level data trends.
    • Identify root causes of student difficulty to inform both core instruction and intervention.
    • Align Tier 1 instruction with intervention needs to ensure a cohesive student experience.
    • Support teachers in understanding and utilizing data effectively.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or other district administrator
