The USCIS Interview Interpreter provides accurate and impartial language interpretation services during U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) interviews. This role ensures effective communication between USCIS officers and applicants who have limited English proficiency. The interpreter must maintain confidentiality, neutrality, and professionalism at all times to support the integrity of the immigration process.
Interviews usually last 5-6 Hours . However , The Interpreter must be available within the hours of 7:00AM-4PM.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpretation Services
Provide consecutive or simultaneous interpretation between English and Haitian Creole during USCIS naturalization, green card, or asylum interviews.
- Accurately convey the meaning, tone, and intent of both parties without omissions or additions.
- Confidentiality and Ethics:
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all personal and case information discussed during the interview.
- Remain impartial and avoid offering personal opinions, legal advice, or advocacy.
- Review and confirm understanding of interview schedules, language pairings, and any special instructions in advance.
- Ensure familiarity with immigration-related terminology.
- Professional Conduct:
- Comply with USCIS interpreter protocols and procedures.
- Arrive punctually and present professionally.
- Notify the appropriate USCIS contact in case of any conflict of interest or inability to interpret objectively.
- Documentation:
- Report any issues that arise during interpretation, such as comprehension challenges or potential miscommunication.
Qualifications
- The Interpreter must be available Within the hours of 7:00AM-4PM
- Language Proficiency
- Native or near-native fluency in English and Haitian Creole, with strong command of grammar and vocabulary in both.
- Experience:
- Prior experience as an interpreter, preferably in legal, immigration, or government settings.
- Knowledge:
- Understanding of USCIS procedures and immigration terminology preferred.
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; advanced education or interpreter certification a plus.
- Skills:
- Excellent listening, memory retention, and communication skills.
- Strong cultural awareness and ability to remain neutral.
- Other Requirements:
- Must not have an open Asylum case.
- must be a US Citizen.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States and pass background clearance.
