What are the responsibilities and job description for the ED Tech/CNA Nights position at PUTNAM COUNTY HOSPITAL?
The Emergency Department (ED) Technician supports timely, safe care for patients of all ages in a rural emergency department. The position may be filled by an Indiana Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or paramedic. The technician assists with bedside care, procedures, monitoring, patient movement, and ED readiness. Assigned clinical tasks depend on the employee’s credential, documented training and competency, authorized orders, and Putnam County Hospital policy.
Essential Responsibilities
Receive assignments and participate in shift report and huddles. Help prepare rooms and equipment for routine visits, urgent arrivals, resuscitation, and transfers.
Assist patients with positioning, mobility, toileting, hygiene, changing clothes, and comfort. Answer call lights, support safe transfers, and use approved lift equipment and fall prevention measures.
Obtain and document assigned vital signs, pulse oximetry, weights, intake and output, and other routine observations after training. Immediately report abnormal findings or a change in condition to the RN; escalate urgent concerns without delay.
Perform 12 lead ECG acquisition, specimen collection, point of care testing, wound care assistance, splinting support, or IV related tasks only when individually approved through hospital policy and competency. Promptly communicate results and concerns to the licensed team.
Assist the RN and provider during examinations, procedures, trauma care, rapid response, and resuscitation. Provide CPR, operate assigned equipment, and obtain supplies within current certification and training.
Observe patients as assigned, including those at risk for falls, confusion, self harm, or escalating behavior. Follow the individualized safety plan, communicate changes immediately, and document assigned observations.
Support patient arrivals, transport, and transfers by preparing equipment, helping move patients safely, and communicating to the RN when a patient requires reassessment or closer monitoring.
Clean and restock treatment spaces; check assigned equipment, supplies, and expiration dates; report missing or malfunctioning items so the ED remains ready throughout the night.
Document care and observations accurately and promptly in the approved ED record. Give a clear handoff of completed tasks, pending work, and patient safety concerns.
Use hand hygiene, PPE, isolation precautions, sharps safety, and approved decontamination processes. Protect patient privacy and follow hospital policies for patient rights, emergency response, and incident reporting.
Work collaboratively with nurses, providers, registration, EMS, laboratory, imaging, and inpatient staff as ED volume and patient acuity change during the shift.
Qualifications:One current qualifying Indiana credential: Certified Nurse Aide on the Indiana Aides Registry, Indiana EMT certification, or Indiana paramedic certification or licensure, as applicable. Maintain the qualifying credential throughout employment.
Current Basic Life Support certification at hire or within the hospital’s required onboarding period. Additional life support certification may be required for duties assigned to a paramedic.
Completion of ED orientation and documented competency for every assigned task. Ability to communicate clearly, use the ED electronic record, and work effectively in urgent situations.
