We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced horseperson to restart off-track Standardbreds that will be entering our program. Purple Haze Standardbred Adoption Program is a 501©(3) that accepts Standardbreds straight from their racing connections with the goal of retraining them for successful second careers. Applicants must be capable of teaching basics on the ground and under saddle. This includes but is not limited to: teaching ground manners, lunging, desensitization, initial backing/breaking, teaching balance/bend, trail riding, and more. This position will require basic horse care and farm duties.
An ideal candidate will:
- Have a dressage background, or at least a basic understanding of the principles and how to apply them.
- Have experience training horses under saddle and/or restarting racehorses.
- Be able to mentor and give direction to volunteers who ride for us and assist with carrying out our program’s mission.
Preference will be given to those with a positive attitude and good communication skills. We routinely have potential adopters coming through the barn to meet and try our adoptable horses. As such, the candidate may be asked to offer input and guidance to these adopters.
Opportunities to attend events, shows, and other activities are available and encouraged. Two major required events per year.
Must be willing to work some weekends and holidays
