Purdue University seeks a visionary Radiation Safety Officer to support, shape, and advance the work of our Radiation Safety Section, ensuring excellence in laboratory safety, compliance, and research support.
About the Role
As Radiation Safety Officer, you will advise on activities for the Radiation Safety Section, guiding strategic plans while supporting research safety across the university. You’ll ensure our use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices meets stringent regulations and license conditions, partnering closely with regulatory agencies and serving on the University Radiation Safety Committee.
Responsibilities
Advise and help implement strategic plans for the Radiation Safety Section, promoting a culture of safety and innovation
Serve as primary liaison to Federal and State regulatory agencies, supporting regulatory compliance and best practices
Advise the director of research safety on operational priorities and performance improvements
Develop, refine, and communicate radiation safety and operational guidelines, including policies and goals
Manage the annual section budget and approve critical expenditures
Offer advisory support regarding campus environmental health matters

What We're Looking For
Education and Experience Required:
Master’s degree in health physics, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related scientific field required
Four (4) years of experience in environmental health and safety required
Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies
A valid driver's license
Skills Needed:
Must be technically proficient in health physics and knowledgeable of applicable Federal and State regulations
Knowledge of radiation safety principles and regulations required
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics required, eligibility for certification required
Must meet criteria established by Nuclear Regulatory Commission for Radiation Safety Officer of a Type A Broad Scope License
Strong written and verbal communication and work organization skills required
Demonstrated conflict resolution and human relations skills required

The anticipated annual salary for this position is between $95,000.00 - $108,000.00 commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience. The final salary offer will be determined based on a variety of factors, including equity, available budget, educational background, and relevant experience.
