Required Qualifivations

PhD degree in musicology or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

Experience teaching at the university level as an instructor of record or teaching assistant.

Ability to teach undergraduate music history and global musics courses.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as instructor of record and/or other expertise in early Western music and American popular music.

Duties

The School of Music invites applicants for an appointment of Visiting Assistant Professor in Musicology, beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about contemporary pedagogical approaches in musicology, broadly defined, at the undergraduate level. Full load teaching requirements will include (but are not limited to) courses in: Western music history before 1900, American popular music history, and global musics. Other responsibilities are assigned by the Director of the School of Music depending on qualifications and experience.

The School

The School of Music is staffed by 24 full time and 45 part time faculty members. It enrolls 270 students in curricula leading to the Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Science in Music Industry, Bachelor of Science in Commercial Music, Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy, Bachelor of Science in Music and An Outside Field, Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Bachelor of Music Technology degrees. The School of Music is housed in the beautiful Purdue Fort Wayne Music Center and the Surack-Sweetwater Music Industry Building featuring state of the art performance and rehearsal facilities. Faculty members enjoy collaborative relationships with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Opera Today!, Fort Wayne Children’s Choir, Fort Wayne Community Band, and Voices of Unity, community partners in residence. The university is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and has been approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

The College

The College of Visual and Performing Arts is composed of three departments: Art and Design, Theatre, as well as the School of Music. More than 600 students majoring in the visual and performing arts receive instruction from a professional and academic staff that includes 32 full-time faculty, numerous associate faculty, and visiting artists. The faculty of the College of Visual and Performing Arts are professionally active, recognized nationally and internationally within their fields, and frequently receive grant awards for their research and creative endeavors. The students of the College of Visual and Performing Arts are regular award winners in regional and national competitions. Internship programs are fostered for students as well as an active association with community business leaders and local projects.

The college is located in four buildings on the Purdue Fort Wayne campus and one facility at Sweetwater. The Visual Arts Building (1991) houses the Department of Art and Design, and the Visual Arts Gallery where exhibitions include student shows and works by select visiting artists. The Department of Theatre maintains the Ernest E. Williams Theatre (1993) and a recently renovated black box, Studio Theatre. The Purdue University Fort Wayne Music Center (2007) includes a 1,600-seat auditorium for concerts and university, and the Surack-Sweetwater Music Industry Building. The PFW Music Center is located next to Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building as part of an arts complex on the north side of campus. The Sweetwater Music Center is located on the campus of this music industry leader and includes teaching, rehearsal and collaborative spaces as well as a full recording studio.
