Job Title: Assistant Professor of Practice in Political Science

City: Fort Wayne

Job Description:

Job Summary

The Department of Political Science and the Department of Economics and Finance at Purdue University Fort Wayne seeks an assistant professor of practice to teach core courses in law and to serve as Campus Pre-Law Advisor. This is a full-time, nine-month appointment. The workload is 4/4, with one course reduction for the role of Campus Pre-Law Advisor. The position is housed within the Department of Political Science, but the teaching responsibilities will be divided between the Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Economics and Finance in the Doermer School of Business. Additional opportunities to contribute courses to the Department of Leadership and Talent Development in the Doermer School of Business may also be available.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in politics and law and business law, advise and mentor undergraduate students and alumni, and participate in service to the departments, colleges, university, community, and profession. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate teaching and student engagement as well as the potential to develop and sustain the Pre-Law Program.

As Campus Pre-Law Advisor, the successful candidate will advise all university students interested in potentially attending law school. The Fort Wayne metropolitan area has over 645,000 residents and is home to a large number of law firms and corporations that require counsel. The person who fills this position is expected to leverage existing relationships and internships with regional bar foundations and other relevant legal organizations, as well as to develop new connections to this legal community in the interest of the university and pre-law advisees. As a member of the university, the new assistant professor of practice will build on our award-winning advising, serving students and alumni from not only political science and economics and finance but also the university community at large.

The position includes a competitive salary and benefits package.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include a J.D.; a record of professional or applied experience in law, including at least five years of relevant experience practicing law; a record of university-level teaching across disciplinary boundaries; and demonstrated commitment to academic advising, mentorship, and institutional service. The successful candidate must also demonstrate the promise of maintaining the professional qualifications necessary to support the Doermer School of Business's AACSB accreditation and faculty credentialing requirements, including maintaining an active law license throughout their appointment to this position.

The University

A modern campus sitting on nearly 600 beautiful acres along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW) has a significant presence in the region as the largest university in northeastern Indiana and is a designated metropolitan campus within the esteemed Purdue University system. Our students earn undergraduate and graduate degrees from one of the most trusted and prestigious brands in higher education. With just under 6,000 students (46% of whom are first generation), over 300 full-time faculty members, and eight colleges and schools, PFW offers its students small classes, individualized attention and an array of high-impact learning experiences. Benefiting from a 13:1 ratio, students work alongside faculty to tackle real-world challenges through groundbreaking research, create exciting new scholarship, and explore new facets of creative expression. PFW serves the region as the hub of intellectual, social, economic, and cultural advancement.

Our campus is located within Indiana’s second-largest city, Fort Wayne, which has a population of 270,000 and resides within a greater metropolitan area of approximately 430,000. The city enjoys a diverse, active, and well-supported arts community, is home to several minor league sports teams, and has miles of pathways and trails that highlight the city and the three rivers that flow through it. Fort Wayne has been named an “All-American City” four times and is consistently cited for the high quality of life, low cost of living, and warm hospitality. Fort Wayne has been named one of the best places to raise children; US News & World Report ranked it a Top 50 Best Places to Live in 2022-2023.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit the following materials: a cover letter addressing the candidate’s qualifications; a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching and advising philosophy; unofficial transcripts; and the names and contact information of three professional references. Candidates invited for a phone interview and subsequently for a campus interview will be expected to deliver a 45-60-minute instructional presentation for students.

Applications must be submitted through the PFW employment portal: https://careers.purdue.edu/FW/job/Assistant-Professor-of-Practice-in-Political-Science/44667-en_US
