Job Summary
Academic Advisors cultivate a student-centered advising practice grounded in mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity. They utilize an asset-based approach that values students’ unique identities and social capital, meeting them where they are in their academic journey. Advisors guide students in course selection, registration, and understanding degree requirements, while also helping them connect with campus opportunities, activities, and programs related to their academic and career goals.
They maintain consistent communication and proactive outreach to support students’ progress, using data and academic audits to identify needs. Advisors assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources and assist in facilitating those connections. They are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of student records and ensuring compliance with university policies. Additionally, advisors educate students on the university’s structures, systems, policies, and best practices to help them navigate their educational experience with confidence.

- Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position.
- Equivalencies are not accepted for this position.
- Demonstrated commitment to work effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
- Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, current and prospective students, parents, and families.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to problem solve and utilize campus resources for individuals and groups.
- Ability and willingness to work in a changing environment.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of undergraduate student development and recruitment.
- Understanding of programs and majors at Purdue University.
- Knowledge of field related to majors advised.
