What are the responsibilities and job description for the OUTSIDE SALES REP position at PUMPS OF HOUSTON INC?
We are seeking a dedicated and personable Outside Sales Representative to join our team specializing in water well products (including pumps, drilling supplies, warranty parts, and related equipment). This role focuses heavily on nurturing long-term relationships with our established, repeat customers who order weekly, while also identifying opportunities for new business.
The position is field-based with significant driving required — up to 2 hours one-way to the farthest customers in our expansive territory. Expect a mix of independence and direct customer interaction in a rural/industrial environment serving well drillers, pump installers, and related professionals.
Key Responsibilities
-
Customer Relationship Management (80% of time):
- Serve as the primary point of contact for an assigned book of existing, high-frequency (weekly) customers.
- Ensure timely pickup and handling of warranty products and returns.
- Provide on-site technical support and troubleshooting assistance for water well products and systems.
- Prepare and deliver quotes as needed to support customer orders.
- Build and maintain strong personal relationships through regular visits, including monthly breakfast or lunch meetings to foster loyalty and increase our share of their business.
-
Business Development (20% of time):
- Prospect for new customers in the territory through targeted outreach, networking, and identifying potential well service providers or related businesses.
- Identify opportunities to expand product placement and solve customer challenges with our offerings.
-
General Duties:
- Manage your own daily schedule with a high degree of self-motivation and autonomy (minimal day-to-day oversight from sales management).
- Travel extensively within the territory, prioritizing face-to-face interactions to strengthen relationships and address needs promptly.
- Stay informed on product specifications, technical details, and industry trends to effectively support customers and close opportunities.
- Track activities, customer interactions, and sales progress as required.
Ideal Candidate Profile We are looking for someone who excels at building genuine, trust-based relationships while also being capable of grasping and applying technical product knowledge. This is a home run hire when we find the right balance.
- Personality Fit (70% emphasis): Outgoing, relatable, and able to connect personally with customers. You enjoy spending time with people, listening to their needs, and becoming a trusted advisor rather than just a vendor.
- Technical Aptitude (30% emphasis): Willing and able to learn water well product details (pumps, systems, warranties, etc.) to solve problems and provide value beyond rapport. Prior technical experience is a plus but not required — we value quick learners.
- Motivation & Stability: Highly self-motivated with a strong work ethic; comfortable working independently without constant supervision.
-
Background Preferences:
- Either recent college graduate (with a degree in business, agriculture, engineering, or related field) eager to build a long-term career, or someone with stable, long-term employment history (few job changes in the last 7 years).
- We are not seeking candidates with frequent lateral job moves or short tenures.
- Personal interests that align well with our customer base (e.g., family-oriented, hunting, fishing, classic cars, country living) are highly valued — these shared interests help build rapport quickly.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation package with strong earning potential based on performance.
- Opportunity to work autonomously in a relationship-driven sales role.
- Long-term career stability with a focus on customer loyalty and repeat business.
- Limited upward mobility beyond sales management — this is ideal for someone seeking a well-paid, steady sales career rather than rapid promotions.
If you thrive on building lasting relationships, enjoy time on the road meeting people in the field, and can balance people skills with practical problem-solving, we’d love to hear from you. This role suits someone who wants to settle in, earn well, and become an integral part of our customers' success in the water well industry.
