DEFINITION OF POSITION: This position's responsibilities are to assist assigned certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for English Language Learner (ELL) students. Responsibilities include instructing students individually or in small groups with English language acquisition, maintaining liaison with teachers and parents of ELL students, and assisting with testing students for program eligibility.

: Building Principal and ELD Teachers


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Completed at least 2 years of study (72 quarter credits/48 semester credits) at an institution of higher education or possess an associate's (or higher) degree or completed one of the following: ETS ParaPro Assessment with a score of 455 or higher, Pearson Paraprofessional assessment, or Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program
  • Evidence of in-service training and/or successful experience working with elementary level students
  • Clerical and computer skills to record data, prepare progress reports, type reports, complete forms, answer emails, etc.
  • Instructional skills in the content areas of math, reading, and writing
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with elementary level students in an instructional setting
  • Experience and/or training in administering assessments
  • Experience/training in mathematics, reading readiness, reading, and writing
  • Experience with various progress monitoring tools
  • Ability to speak a foreign language and/or experience in another culture
  • Training or experience using a variety of evidence-based reading and math curriculum
  • Behavior management training/classroom management

ESSENTIAL JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES:

Depending upon individual assignment, the paraeducator may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Assist in creating relationships and learning environments conducive to learning with young students
  • Under the guidance of the certified staff, assist in delivery of educational services to students in reading, reading readiness, writing, behavior, and math including assessment, planning, and management of student records and materials
  • Provide small group instruction in the areas of language acquisition to a variety of different grade levels and language proficiencies
  • Administer assessments as requested by certified staff (WELPA and/or ELP21)
  • Monitor student progress and regularly provide progress reports for supervising staff
  • As part of the English Language Development team, meet as necessary with ELD teachers to collaborate and discuss student progress
  • Work collaboratively to support English language acquisition of ELLs
  • Work effectively with language learners
  • Self-directed and able to carry out directions from ELD teachers independently
  • Possess and practice strong interpersonal skills with a wide variety of people both inside and outside the organization (staff, parents, community members, other agencies, etc.)
  • Be a positive team builder who works in a collaborative manner
  • Meet multiple demands in pressure situations and maintain high levels of quality work
  • Maintain confidentiality consistent with district ethical guidelines
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing
  • Regularly demonstrate professionalism in appearance, actions, decisions, and overall performance
  • Work with minimal supervision and be flexible
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff


MENTAL DEMANDS
:

May experience frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities; required to deal with a wide range of physical or emotional disabilities; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students


TERMS OF CONTRACT
:

  • Salary: General Paraeducator: $24.02 - $27.81/hour
  • Duration: Hours 6.0 hours/day (8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.), 180 days/year plus two additional district directed days
  • Benefits/Leaves: Medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as per the collective bargaining agreement between the Pullman Paraeducators Association (PPA) and the Pullman School District.
